Francis Joyon was 12 days Shocked ahead of Ellen MacArthur's record until today, but the starboard halyard for the mainsail is about to snap and he runs the risk of losing the mast. It would be such a shame, so close (relatively speaking) to the end.

Good luck to him and all his team.

It's his shroud or cap shround that is coming unscrewed from the mast.  He has used a halyard to secure it (a bit), but it will not hold long

Crappy luck.  I wonder if he can fix it.  He's showed how fast he can go, but can he keep the stick up and finish in time?

only 170 miles from the finish now, on course to beat Ellen's record by two weeks and also be the second fastest boat round the planet ever.

go Francis

Yep, he was worried about tacking near the Azores because the shroud he repaired wouldn't be under tension any longer and the repair might snap (yeah I thought it was a shroud to start with, but the French text said "halyard" so I got all confuuused...).

He went up the mast 3 or 4 times in rough weather and he's hurt his ankle quite badly. For the moment, he keeps going on Nurofen and adrenalin.

Right now, he's just over 100 nautical miles away from Brest. If everything goes well, he'll be there tomorrow, with a record that might hold for a long long time...

Vas-y, Francis, à donf' !

It was both I think... The main halyard was chafing and was about to fail and when he went up the mast to have a look he discovered the problem with the shroud...

Hopefully it will survive another 24hrs to get him home for the record...

HE'S MADE IT!

00:39:58 French time, he's arrived! He passed the finished line tonight and will be in Brest in the morning.

He's a mere 13 days ahead of Ellen's time and, after having big trouble with shrouds and injuries, had to drop the average speed to a conservative 18-20 knts...

Phenomenal performance there!!

57 days 13 hours 34 minutes 6 seconds. Words fail me to describe this feat.

14d 00h 44min and 27sec better than Dame Ellen!
