Do forumites beleive that they get value for money for their Club membership fees and what provisions by their clubs are most important to this end. My own expectations in order of priority are as follows:

1.   Regular racing with accurate and promptly produced results

2.   Secure boat storage.

3.   Changing facilities with showers that work!

4.   Organised social scene with bar open after sailing.

Am I expecting too much for £150 per year, (2 boat storage fees), bearing in mind we sail on the North Sea and all Club duties, - Rescue, Race Officer, Kitchen, Bar etc. are carried out by members

That's a good question! We are currently revising the subs at Lancing, because we've got all of the above for £88 per year for a Full member or a Family member and boat park fees between £36 and £51, depending on size. Although we'd like to keep it at that, it's getting difficult to manage maintenance within that budget. £150 would be a luxury!!

Depending on the size of your club, it seems that £150 isn't too much to pay per year. Of course, if you go to "posh" club like HISC, you're going to pay a premium.

To other forum members, what do you pay as subs, on average (membership + boat storage)? Are you happy with it?

xxx IsaJ

PS. After Hiker's edit. In our club, all duties are carried out by members - 2 duties a year, either sailing or canteen.

Inland clubs tend to be more expensive because the overheads are bigger - sea clubs rarely have to pay the Queen to rent the sea, but Thames water want loads of dosh to use their reservoirs...

Kielder Water SC has Racing, Boat park and Showers for the same cost - £150 for a family, £110 for a single - and duties, but since only 1% of membership CAN be in easy reach we have no regular bar life, except for Open Meetings

However we are able to camp at the club for free over weekends so the social life hots up then.

Kielder is one of the remoter spots of Northumberland and absolutely fantastic!

We have a 1km diameter circle of 12 buoys for regular racing with a central mooring - no OOD can possibly fail to set a good first windward leg and has a great choice of course types.

We also have seven miles to travel to the far end on our Round the Lake races.

But then, Kielder IS the largest man made lake in Europe - volume and shore wise. Rutland gets it for surface area only.

Ours is relatively cheap ,

£160 for subs and £115 for the boat

This covers everything at the club (we have 4 full time staff ) and the lake is open 7 days a week for sailing with rescue cover. The canteen is run under franchise. Our bar is used after racing a bit, but we have the same problem as Kielder we all live to far away so have to travel home (we aren't allowed to camp except on open w/ends though)

Edit* we don't have to do any duties unless you race then you are asked to help on race duty by your class (rescue and OOD are all done by volunteers)

We tick all those boxes at Leigh-on-Sea (well. OK, the racing's been a bit down on numbers just recently and we're working on improving the security side of our boat storage) and our fees seem to be a bargain:

Class  Code  Subscription  Entry fee
Full member F £82 £60
Family membership B £102 £60
Associate member A £38 £45
Midshipman - working M £42 £35
Cadet & Midshipman - student C £20
Social S £62

Rack fees

Dinghy size   Fee
Tenders   £40
Dinghies - small/ medium   £55
Dinghies - large        Cats - small   £70
Cats - medium/large

£80

Yes, the members do volunteer for duties (although it always seems to be the same few faces) and maintenance is carried out by volunteers also to keep costs down. We've recently built a major extension to the club and upgraded the changing rooms. We've purchased 3 new rescue boats in the last two years. So, unsurprisingly, there is now some talk about increasing the fees. However, even if they went up 15-20% they'd still be a good deal....

Far too old to still be doing this......

Hawley charge £60 for boat park and £60 for membership. This covers pretty much everything except some social events. Racing is free if you want to brave the skanky mud (not enough water to even be classified as a form of liquid anymore) islands, shifts and lack of wind. We don't have to do any duties because there are a team of staff to do that but it is prefered if racing members do at least 1 RO a year

Thank you all for your input. It seems in comparison our fees do look pretty reasonable. The only problem being that our club management fail to organise 3 from the 4 priorities listed , - the one we do get is secure boat storage.

To cut a long story short, I and several others feel that our management committee have 'lost the plot' and are more concerned with other issues than what really matters to the average fee paying membership and before I start making waves   I thought that a comparison with other clubs would be a good place to start for getting back to basics.
