I'm looking for a potential class to sail on an inland lake with my daughter that is more suitable for our weight. Around 25stone combined

We have a N12.
I'm just touching the scales at 18stone.

Thinking possible

Merlin?

What do you think?

Merlin’s probably a big climb up to the side for small daughter. How about an albacore? Depends a lot on how tall she is, but suspect limits more you in the back... perhaps you can crew instead 😀

Quite a lot of boats that will carry a big helm need an equally strong crew so that rules out any powerful asymmetric apart from perhaps a 2000.

Yes plus the asy on our lake won't be any use. To the sym would be more suitable.

Albacore is a good shout as it carried weight well and if you are willing to hike then your daughter will not need too too much unless its blowing old boots!

GP14, Merlin, Ent, Albacore, Scorpion, whichever is sailed locally. 25 stone is about ball park for many double-handers so there's not shortage of options. 

Some of the boats that carry this weight will also have higher sheet loads. Which may be a struggle for a 7 stone helm. Plus a few are set up expecting crews to be smaller, so it can be a squeeze in the front. 

Unless you're on one of the larger inland lakes I wouldn't choose an asymmetric. But if you are somewhere relatively big then a 2000 or 400 could be good.

Try out a Merlin. When i switched to a Merlin from a Mirror, my two crews were 10 and 8 and coped well. The Merlin has a small easily handled jib and you can get small spinnakers although the full size spinnie is not that much of a handful if it is set up correctly. Just choose gentle days for the first few sails.

As for comment made about it being a long way across, all of my young crews have been far faster than adults in getting across.

Maybe fit a 2:1 jib sheet system.
Avoid a large spinnaker. It won’t be fun for either of you.

As a large dad with 3 small daughters, an Albacore is exactly what I got. No point looking at total crew weight as it is all about what weight can be taken at the back. As suggested a 2 to 1 on the jib sheet will make it easier in strong winds, otherwise with your weight you can sail it singlehanded in a lot of conditions.
