Amazing effort from RS to potentially get their boat in to the games
However, as I understand it, they are suggesting the 9 for men and 7 for women. Not many ladies will be able to hold down a 7 in any breeze (wasn't the argument that the 5.7m Radial was too powerful for the smaller ladies ?) Similarly the 9 - smaller nations may struggle. I cant get the 'beach club' style Aero high boom out of my head though - it just looks wrong compared to the numerous classes who have the boom clamped to the deck (Europe, Laser, D Zero, Finn, OK, Contender, Phantom even) Also - with a 30kg hull, will that make the competitive weight even tighter than a Laser ? |

The Laser is a strange and uncomfortable boat, but a beginner can buy a wreck for £500 and start the ( very!) long road to Gold!. Cheapest Aero ten times that? and RS have history in producing new models to keep sales rolling

To be fair to RS (and Laser and Topper) they quickly drop the commercially unsuccessful boats for something new but continue to support the 200/400 etc that have reached critical mass.

Yes found it odd that the report seemed to criticize the radial for being to powerful but then glossed over the fact the aero requires a higher helm weight

And to be even fairer, after passing the RS300 to The Boatyard at Beer RS continued to pay for floor space for the class at the Dinghy Show for two years even though they had no commercial interest by then. Fair play.

Will we be treated, at the Olympics, to sailors of smaller stature opting to drop down a sail size when it gets a bit breezy? You don't get much joy from a 9 at less than 85kg + if there is anything like a breeze, hence Aero opens being 7 orientated if it's much over 12kts. I'm fairly sure that 90kg male Olympic aspirants would rather take their chances in a Finn with a rig suited to their physique than an Aero 9. Whilst I can see the sense in opting for the Aero due to the fact that it already has global 'leverage', WS's reasoning seems somewhat flawed with regard to the demographic suitability.

So, nobody spotted all those Finn Sailors sat over there wondering what they can do with the Aero 9mtr?

It seems RS are now considering an Aero 6 rig for the women (see their Facebook page). Can WS pick a boat that wasn’t at the evaluation event?

I remember in a FB/Insta post just after the trials RS seemed a little disgruntled that other boats had changed set ups slightly despite instruction from WS to bring the boats as they were being sailed.
Possibly frustrating as RS brought the 7 and 9 as they were, possibly despite already having the 6 in the pipeline and knowing it was probably better suited to the women's singe hander.
