Surely not?

I mean, yes the block has a SWL of 1000 kg, and the kine and plate, and I'm sure if you use good epoxy that will work. But won't it just rip the top layer off your deck?

Anyone used this in real life?

Might just be me, but I prefer belt and braces for blocks etc, wouldn't fancy heading out to sea with my blocks glued on.

I've used surface glued on blocks in tension, but with a far bigger glue area than that, and not 150kg loads either. Thing is though, I didn't have the maths to calculate how big a glue area I really needed, whereas hopefully whoever is responsible for these does. I also wonder how long the strops last before chafe becomes an issue. Well, time will tell.

SWL 150 kg, it’s a relatively modest amount, you’d not use it for a primary kicker take off, but lesser control points should be fine

That would be the worry. I'm sure Harken can do their sums, and the ratings would work on a good substrate - but you are making assumptions about the quality of the lay of whatever you stick it to. Any fault in that could prove messy.

How do you ever replace the string or block?

I have used a home made version for my toe-strap anchor points for the last 10 years. Not huge load, but I was nervous the first time I used them!

I think its good, but then I like glue! If you think that an epoxy glue will give 15MPa+ ( 2000psi in old money) This should be good for the loads they say. Will it rip up laminates ? I doubt most lamnates will have + 30MPa shear strength so the laminate would have to be complete crap or gelcoat really badly stuck to cause damage. Go for it less problems with holes going through laminates which is good.

Biggest issue won't be the use of them, but rather how you replace them. Not sure I'd want to be using a grinder right next to the deck of my boat and hoping I don't slip
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

Not watched the video, but glue is not great in tension, not sure of values but you also need to consider ripping thin laminates off cores in dinghy world as well.
Adhesive joints always fail first in peel so you have to avoid that scenario.
Like is said above, most epoxies can do 36N/mm2 in shear which even with a safety factor of 2, gives a tonne per square inch!! That’s a lot!!
Most importantly tho this is predicated on clean well prepared surfaces ie all paint or gel rambled from both, 120g keying, chemically clean, immaculately mixed glue.
Also, in shear you aren’t ripping thin laminates off cores. Although if I was going for as aggressively concentrated a load as a tonne per square inch even in shear I’d not want that on a dinghy ish single skin substrate of say 300gsm. I’d have a staggered local reinforcement to suit.

Plenty of this sort of stuff on my boat.

If it goes wrong, you can grind it off and install a new one.

A good piece on diy. The variations are endless
