I googled Enterprise Mast step for a price and location for a new member, was shocked by how much Selden want for a small block of plastic, how can they justify £39.

That does seem quite remarkable.

II can only think they make them individually by hand. That's about right for a reasonable hourly rate of cutting, drilling and filing.

I suspect that it would be more expensive if it were a BMW part, and probably the price of the boat to have it fitted by a BMW Technician

I think to say that its "just a piece of plastic" might be a little overly simplistic. I have no doubt that its nothing overly special, but it will need to be quite dense as it takes significant compression on quite a small surface. I'd have thought it'd be Delrin, I don't think polypropylene would be up to the job.

Are they made by hand? Who knows! I'd think its a reasonable bet that Selden don't make them in house and given the rate of Enterprise registration they aren't going to be buying them in the thousands, or even hundreds - with lack of volume the price will go up.

The most annoying part I've come across is the mast halyard sheave on the 800 for £57

The price is a tad high, but you'd except it if it worked! It's just the most frustrating piece of plastic, the halyard always falls down the side of the sheave, preventing you from either raising or dropping the main. And the only way to stop it is to put a bolt through instead of a pin to hold the cheeks together. It doesn't even come pre-drilled!

There's a few little idiosyncrasies about the 800 which maybe could be done better, and RS are pretty good a making small improvements for usability... how this crap piece of hardware has survived so long I have now idea!

Exactly - I suspect the cost is in the supply chain to manufacture and get it to market, rather than the materials per say.  When an apple branded silicon phone case is 40 quid, and they really do have 10s if not 100’s of thousands of volume, you do really have to think that something bespoke for an archaic legacy dinghy, really isn’t overly expensive.

Also worth considering that Selden are commited to supporting a dealer network, as I found out this week when asking a Selden a quite basic technical question, and I was informed to make my request through a dealer ... quote "I don’t have understanding of the technicalities you have enquired about, which is the reason why we have a dedicated network of distributors and technical centres to help you.  As we are the factory we distribute stock to them and we rely on them to give all the detailed technical advice or ask the relevant questions to get you the answers you need" ... to be fair, following a grump from myself, I did get a call back from their Technical Account Manager who suggested a number of fabricators who could make a doubler to allow me to put an intermediate pin hole in a Selden mast step.
