Just out of curiosity, I was wondering how long it takes for an RS600 to tack from trapeze to trapeze, close hauled at sea in a force 5 to 6 (racing conditions)?

Difficult one to answer, 2.7seconds 😋

For a competent 600 sailor it will be quick, as if you slow down the track you'll end up in irons.

in those conditions any boat like a 600, 700 or Musto is going to almost stop after tacking.  The reason people get stalled is they don't push the boat through the tack, the don't sheet out enough as the come across the boat and finally don't get new weight on the wing far enough forward.

I'm not sure it matters too much how long because you accelerate so quickly afterwards - thats not to say you'd tack very often unless you needed to though

Hi guys,

Thank you for the replies. I understand about the technique of tacking and know you also have to release the kicker. I don't sail a 600 but I used to have a Contender, years ago. 

I sailed it so badly I couldn't use my own experience of tacking from trap to trap as a benchmark - this is why I've asked the question here, hoping some bright young things would come up wuth a sensible answer. Somehow, 2.7 seconds doesn't strike me as sensible LOL 

Any more offers?

I've only ever seen one 600 sailor actually wire to wire, most if not all now sit down on new wing and hook on so I'm guessing about 6-8 seconds for a tack depending on wave state

You only have to release the kicker if you aren't quick enough or have poor technique. Once you master the technique and are quick enough you leave it on block to block upwind.

If there is the force 5 to 6 detailed in discussion point you must be a sailing legend. I'm with Neptune's 6 seconds on this. In a force 2 to 3 it may be reduced to about 3 secs though
