Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in posting what they like, or what you have found works best on your boat....?

Twinning lines or reaching hooks, or even sheets and guys...?

Twin poles, ejecting or non ejecting? etc etc etc

Still by far and away the best kite system i have used is the 505 twin pole guy and sheet system.  It makes gybing so fast and almost flawless even for a relative numpty.  Takes a bit of setting up and a fair bit of cash in string and purchase, but i am not sure why anyone would use any other system nowadays!  I am sure i have pics buried somewhere!

Depends whether it's a Merlin or not.
Ejecting twin poles are great when your crew is still on the learning curve, or pushing the limits perhaps, but most of the time I think the best crews are just as quick with a standard Winder twin pole system.
I don't know what the state of the art in 505's is, but i used to prefer single ejecting pole with twinning lines. That was 25 years ago :-(

I really like the sheets and guys system the 505s run and will be trialling it this year.. Running twin ejector poles on a self made carbon spiro on my merlin. The 505 system would quicken it up. One less string to pull.

Thoughts on twinning lines vs reaching hooks??? I like twinners

Twinners for me to be honest.  But I am not precious.

RS400 the modern twin pole 505 systems are superior to any of the old systems and make a noticeable difference in speed through the gybes to even the top crews using single poles launched or manual.

That said i have not owned a 505 for a few years now so it may of moved even further forward.  Settign the system up was not cheap, it took hours of planning and time looking and learning from others set up.  NHRC, i looked making a home made launcher but settled on a proper twin spiro in the end.  mainly for reliability.  The ball and socket style system means that you don't have to worry about rope chafe ofr block wear like you do on some of the cheek block style home-brew systems.

BTW great thread.

Null, I chose to make a spiro out of carbon myself. Cost about £40. It's really easy.

They are massively over priced and there is little engineering involved.

Being one of the very few people in the country who has owned the same boat rigged with both systems, my preference without doubt is a ratchet block on each shroud anchor and a sprit out the front.

On our Javelin I just shackled a block onto the pole eye., then used a cut down alloy windsurfer mast as a single pole. It worked as well but needed powerful bungee to retract.....kept the helm on his toes!

On the Smokers Satisfaction Merlin I rebuilt I used a twin pole system like other Merlins. The poles were made from Gazebo poles...that worked as well!

Never spend money when a bodge will do......

Hmmm...! Not very effective with symmetrical spinnakers though Jim.

Shall I amend the title to save confusion?

I looked at making one, and shipping in a waterat version which is much cheaper.  Feedback was that the cheek blocks were not deigned to take the loading from the kit pole (505 loads are probably the highest i would guess).  Albeit i see prototypes and home made versions have moved on from when i bought the twin spiro.  One of my friends offered to make me a tin spiro for free (he is a tool maker,, engineer and draughtsman by trade) but i am impatient and a number of people were buying in a batch at the time!  I think i would have a go at building one if I owned a boat that allowed for it again.

Love to see pictures of your home made version NHRC
