Everyone interested in this topic should probably have a look at the Annual Report first.

http://www.rya.org.uk/SiteCollectionDocuments/legal/RYA-Annual-Report-2014.pdf

There are some interesting numbers in there... £5.5m in product and service sales, a quarter of their T/O; nigh-on equal to their 'World Class' programme.  So what is that?  That can't be just RYA handbooks and pencil sharpeners can it?

So what do the RYA do for you?  What aren't they doing, or could it be we just aren't aware they are doing, that would be better for sailing?

Oh, and before someone else does, I'll post this:

You could make a great long list of all the RYA programmes such as the NSS, Champion Club, Sailability, BlueGreen etc, and some will love them and some will hate them.

It's marmite.

As these days there must be an over arching organisation for everything the rya gives the sport a central focus point for those thinking about starting up.
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

Dinghies are just a fraction of what they do, there's all the Yachtmaster stuff, Powerboat training, all stuff way beyond what most of us do, which is right and proper since the RYAs remit is also way beyond what we do. Last time I was at the RYA I stole a glance at their internal phone list, and really very few of their staff have much to do with dinghy racing.

As I've just said on another thread, the RYA have sent along a coach for both our kids and adults (think the latter, at least had to pay something, but still). They've also provided coach and instructor training at the club.

Think we've got some legal advice off them too at some stage. Useful there, as I guess they have an overview of what's happening at other clubs.

And it's always comforting to know that they are there if you need them to appeal to after a dodgy protest decision.

Plus, at the risk of starting 'the usual discussion', they administer the PY system, which I'm sure is a lot better than we as a club would come up with. I suspect our bully-boys would have the 800 rated at 920 by now without a national framework to rely on.

Fundamentally and arching over any complaint we may ever have.. They've kept Whitehall at bay all these years and that alone is worth putting up with any of their failings.

Their size is a double edged sword, really. Because of it, they are able to do as GRF says, stand up to Whitehall, but also because of it, dinghy sailing becomes a small part of what they do, as Jim says. The danger is, we get lost in all their shinier activities. So from a broad perspective, the Olympics are a good thing, because they are in dinghies, and so keep dinghies in their mind's eye. Maybe we would get less funding at grass roots level, even for adults (direct or indirect) if not for the elite funding?

Oh, and they put on the dinghy show, which whilst flawed in many ways, I love going to.

To be fair to the RYA their regional reps have been extremely helpful with regard to obtaining Sport England grants for boats and improvements, and also CASC (which is a bit in limbo at the moment).  Our club has benefited by at least £70k from this, so around £70/member.

However I have sat on an RYA committee in the past and I found the experience to be quite depressing, because I never felt that many of the initiatives put the members first.  Much appeared to be about self promotion by in order to get on ISAF committees (though I accept that this is where the power lies).  I also felt that a lot of the financials were driven by the RYA's pension burdens.

I drafted a revision of the National Classes scheme (for adult boats) which got binned by RYA Council because of conflicts with the Junior Programme.  The plan was intended to focus attention on a limited number of classes to promote adult fleet racing at club level.  I was quite hacked off by this.

I cancelled my RYA Personal Membership when they did not support Thames Sailing Club, on the grounds that defending their sailing water was in conflict with the RYA Powerboat owning members.
