... if you could?

By this I don't mean a lick of paint or new sails etc, but design changes...
Oh, and only for boats you currently own.

D-One - much is probably down to me not doing it right at the moment, but I'm struggling with kite launch and drops. I'm a little envious of the pump systems on the skiffs (RS700?) right now.

OK - not a lot to change tbh... I wish it was a bit faster, but that's why I've got the D-One

Laser - hiking position, lack of cockpit depth, spars, sails...

Over to you..

Just spotted an '09 boat on the Duck at a good price. You're right though, it's a very well sorted design.

Lightning - move the thwart forwards by 6" - the only option is to remove it.
Minisail - move freeboard aft, better rig, stronger rudder system, foils with shape (though to be fair, this is allowed, as is a stronger rudder, just difficult because of the freeboard.
Firefly - perfection on water...
Mirror - do whatever I have to to keep it sailing
Puffin - ditto
Topper - allow a bolt rope sail and mast to match. Bigger rig. Foils that float.
Firefly 2324, Puffin 229, Minisail 3446 Mirror 70686

Streaker: more open foil design to allow a properly shaped, aerofoiled daggerboard, get rid of the thwart, and an on the water adjustable forestay, but all in all, a great little boat!

Laser...make the rig lighter
Rs200 add a kick plate like the 300... The older the boat the more sloppy it is.(ok mine is sn 230)

I'd try to make my phantom more comfortable downwind. I know that you can get thwarts, etc, but the bulk don't have them and I could do with one now.

Also float a bit lower in the water when on its side.
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

Snap snap re floating lower Maxi'.

I'd lose a little buoyancy from my Contender side tanks somehow, some Phantoms I think have sections of side tanks that flood.

Regarding more comfort, JJ Boats do a stepped floor version Phantom, would that help?

Assuming I can be liberal enough with this thread to talk of my next boat, I'd stick a bigger rig on it. And oh yes, an RS sticker just to wind up Russy.

RS700 - 1. More robust foil structure to avoid chordwise cracking of the rudder and trailing edge chips on daggerboard. 2. Re-design of chute opening and spinnaker patch position to reduce the small holes in the bottom panels of the spinnaker. I believe moving the chute mouth back in the boat and increasing the diameter of the opening would do it but would balls up the forestay attachment! 3. More robust layup in the side decks and deck between the mast and forestay to take the compression loads. May need an additional fore-aft bulkhead to stiffen up this area.

Graduate - Its very difficult to improve on perfection, but 1. possible removal of the aft buoyancy tank so that the boom and blocks don't scratch the varnish! 2. Find a professional solution to create an inboard sheeting system that doesn't either sheet to the floor or require unsightly ironmongery or cats cradles of bridles and tweaker lines.
