Just noticed this on the daily blog, Is this a first? Perhaps it should be introduced for all international classes!

With the price of gold does it make ex-world champion sails more valuable on the second hand market!

Rule B13.3.2 Sail Identification addition as follows – A gold coloured insignia may be used by current and former World Champion helmsmen of the Flying Fifteen Class.
Reason for Change
At the FFI Council Meeting of July 2011, Council resolved that current and past World Champions of our Class be permitted to use a gold insignia on their sails to recognise their achievements.

Sort of like primary school for the Stars. Do well, you get a gold star!

Not gold insignias, but in the Laser class, champions and runners up at major (world and continental/regional) events are entitled to have 'medallions' and 'bars' on their sails. In practice I haven't seen that many actually do so, although changing for a new sail every couple of regattas would be a PITA. Not sure if they get one medallion per result, Robert Scheidt's sail would be polka dot!
World cycling champs gain the priviledge of wearing a rainbow jersey whilst competing in that particular event/discipline in that given year. Forever after that, they can be seen to wear the rainbow on their cuff sleeves.

....did not a well known 'convenience food' retailer once allow those with the greatest judged proficiency in 'service' to sport gold stars above their name badges?

perhaps I could paint little marker bouys down one side of my cockpit to denote the number of marks I've belted while not paying sufficient attention (or allowing enough room) over the years?

Or perhaps miniature Lasers to indicate how many you have hit?

Countries that have won the world cup put a star on their football strip.

AIUI actually putting a gold star on your star isn't that common, as it singles you out from the crowd. Not a clever thing to do on a competitive start line.

Contenders can do it as well, not that I have ever seen it used.
