The RS 300 is no longer listed as part of the RS range of boats.    Has it been dropped  in favour of the Aero ?

wow- this has taken a while to come out....

It's now marketed by the Boatyard at Beer... so yes, dropped from the marketing and promotion (along with the 600) but still retained within the RS Class Association.

Edit - link to BY@Beer but nothing on their site yet:

Looks like the Beer Boatyard make the 300 and 700 for RS but don't sell them directly.    RS still list the 700 in their range but no longer the 300.    I can only conclude that no one is marketing the 300.

Shame really because the 300 is one of the best hiking single handers to be had.

Edit:  As YW spotted, the RS600 is dropped as well.  RS are going to be praying the Aero will hit pay dirt

quite a few sold already apparently... probably more than the past 5 years of 600s and 300s combined.  It makes sense to retract from active marketing, grandfathering the class and still providing an infrastructure for the aftermarket owners who still love them.

The dearth of 300 and 600 sales is probably worse than your guess.   And I'm guessing the Vareo and 100 sales aren't much to shout about either.  So, the Aero needs to break this succession of poor selling, hiking single handers.    Clearly, having the Zero launch at the same time isn't helpful.  I don't think the Fire is a threat ; only to the Blaze.

I'd agree with that... I know of one person who was going to get a 300, but with the rumours of the class's potential demise, decided to wait for an Aero; only to go for the Zero instead... swayed by the LWL measurement.

The 300 probably needs to move to a smaller builder who can nurture it.

I would chose the Zero over the Aero in a heart beat.  Yep, the LWL is better and  I prefer the transom sheeting arrangement on the adjustable traveler.   Setting the upwind leech tension like this is really nice.   It means you can go block to block at the end of the boom, have a nice low boom with the sail close to the deck ( I'm sure there are a lot of very good technical reasons for this) which then springs up when you want to tack.

I've got to say, I'm not the biggest fan of booms that permanently stick up in the air.

It needs to find its Mike Lyons.... and if I'm brutally honest, imho, cut its ties with the RS Association and do its own thing.  Starting with opening up the Sail Maker and a bit of a rig overhaul.  Given the right direction, a bit of a diet (to also aid a reduced production cost), it could resurrect as a very nice singlehander... with an HD Sail.   LOL

Aesthetically maybe, but if that were the price for having a really low, say deck level gooseneck, then aerodynamically it should be worth paying.

Closing the gap at the leading edge is what you mostly need to get an aspect ratio advantage. Obviously, it is better still if you can lower the clew as well (the Finn looks good on this basis, at least), but in a shallow-cockpit boat it would require a very contortionist type of sailor to get through a tack.

Not sure I'd apply any of this to the Aero - the gooseneck is pretty high.
