I'm down to do this event in the Alto on Sunday, but looking at the forecasts it's looking like 2-3 mph, rising to 4 mph at 1500.

Now, I'm not the sort to cry off when WindGuru looks bad normally (see previous thread), but due to working away I've had 1 day with my family in the last 28 - much as I want to race I don't want to sit around all day to be eventually abandoned.

For those that sail Southampton water regularly, what wind speed is required to race effectively in the tide/current down there?

Where you will be racing there is sod all tide. Use to sail at Weston sc and never bothered with which way the tide goes.

Maybe not one for a few of the asymetrics perhaps then ;-)  .... but we've entered, have no compilcated 3rd sail to humour, and no doubt will enjoy the odd Guinness afterwards - Yes, me and 'Andy' the 'Dancing Farmer' will be taking it as seriously as ever.

Where would you rather be ?  Racing and on the water or studying those ruddy forecasts and deciding it really 'was a good idea not to bother anyway'  Only thing is the wind might pick up a tad and you have no bloody chance at all if you are already at the Guinness stand  !

Tis true. On the positive side, the later update seems to indicate better winds than originally forecast

Shame for the event, and more so for the competitors that went.

Probably the 1st I've ever made the right call in deciding not to travel

They were not sailing when I saw them. Mind you nor were any of the big boats. At one point I did seem one of the Artemis ones with its spinny up going side ways. I also saw what looked like an RS100 with the helm standing on the foredeck in an attempt to reduce wetted surface.
