I've been sailing my N12 for this season but a new baby is pushing me toward getting a single hander. Local club fleets are Lasers or Solos both of which I am too light for and uninspired by so I am thinking of settling for the handicap fleet and getting something that will provide a little more excitement and a learning curve. Top of the list is an RS300 but I am concerned that at 67kg / 10.5st I may find it hard work. Other options for puny lightweights seem to be: RS600 - I had one 10 years ago (I was a stone lighter) and found that it was a handful in anything above a F3 but perhaps the extra stone will help. Looks like there are plenty of reasonably priced boats. IC - don't know much about them but they look like a great new challenge and there seems to be a revived interest with the new rules. An old nethercott could be a cheap intro to the class. Farr3.7 - Perfect, but I'm not sure that I have the funds to get one (no cheap secondhand boats available yet). Any thoughts on the 300 at my weight or any of the other options? My ego is going to take a hit in any of these boats so which do you think might be the easiest to get to the point of sailing round the course without swimming? I don't know that the easiest to sail round the course without swimming ought to be your key option: if you're a competent 12 sailor then you should be able to step up to any of them.
I would have said the location where you plan to sail would be a large part of the choice. At a small inland venue the 300 would be the top choice, but if its appreciably over 100 acres then a kite free Canoe or 600 would be viable. Personally I like the Canoe: I sail it on a raised reservoir of 122 acres which I reckon is really close to a minimum practical size for both the IC and the 600. If it were a tree lined ground level lake I'm not sure I'd enjoy sailing either boat... Edited by JimC - 02 Jul 13 at 11:56am |

I sail at Chew so there is enough room. I guess I'm concerned that a combination of being at the lighter end of the spectrum and perhaps not being able to dedicate enough time to the boat could mean that a 600 would be a sufferfest.
A 300, although I'm still light could be more manageable without having to deal with the trapeze. I'm assuming that I'm a better weight for a canoe (although I read different things about this?) and so this may offset the difficulty somewhat. My time in the 12 has been limited but I've enjoyed the responsiveness and feeling the boat really respond to my movements. Edited to Add - a moth would be fun but I don't think that Chew allows foiling boats and I'm not good enough to sail one anyway.

Canoes seem to tolerate an astonishing range of weights.

D-one?
It's not just about the boat Are there any people in the club who'd be good to race against? What have they got? Or is there anyone similar who might buy what you get? Blaze?

Not too light for a 300. Will struggle a bit when the wind gets up but only the top guys do not. More kicker and then even more kicker and when you are block to block (about 12knots!) it is about your own raw sailing skill.
I weigh in at 90kgs, a mate of mine about 70kgs. We both have B rigs. When we did some pairing during practice he could not beleive how much kicker I was using. It wasn't until he realised he started to overcome "issues" with the boat. Raising the dagger also helps loads. So I think your weight is OK.
Shamless plug - my 300 is for sale.
Look at other boats though.
