This year I will be starting on the third season for a set of 3mm dyneema trapeze lines. The boat is sailed pretty much weekly for 9 months of the year and of course kept outside for all the summer months. How quickly does dyneema degrade. The lines came from a top supplier, I fitted them carefully with no chafe points and no signs of wear or fraying are showing.

Do they need changing?

If so should I replaced with the same and accept them as a lifed item?

Go up a size and change them for 4mm with the (questionable) idea of lengthening their life?

Thoughts from the technical posse please.

Difficult to say. But SK78 Max (D12) is supposed to have a better coating to protect from UV.

I'm not sure how often they'd need replacing but I'd hazard a guess at around once every 2 years to be safe? Ropes wear out fast, it's not unreasonable to expect dyneema racing sheets to only last a few week long regattas in a lot of wind before they're at risk of breaking. On racing yachts like Farr 45s they'll replace most of the ropes a few times per season, mainly because dyneema shows very little sign of wear or fraying when it's getting to the end of it's life. Its hard to try and predict when and where it's likely to snap.

I'd stick with 3mm and just replace them often.

Might be worth asking some 49er/29er sailors. I think it's pretty commonplace to use vectran trap lines in those fleets so they'll probably have a good idea!

I had Herzog trap lines on my 49er that lasted over 3 yrs. Tried D12 on my 700 but it was too springy so have used wire ever since.

Just a note: Don't ask 29er sailors, only wire trapeze lines are allowed due to it being a youth class.

Yes, the increased risk of getting a dangerous half hitch entrapment should they go slack. A consideration of course.

I don't like D12. It creeps quite a lot and shrinks considerably under UV light.

I stick to Vectran where stability is required, and would use wire for trapeze. I can't see any real advantage to rope.

Ohh I never knew that. Has that been a rule for a long time? Because I heard some pretty good guys in the dinghy park talking about replacing theirs last year, maybe they just didn't know the rule!
