Who remembers the Pompey Perisher? For years the south coasts leading winter open event for dinghies, it is now just something of a memory.

Hayling Island Sailing Club is proud to put the name firmly back in the calendar . . . To be held annually in mid February on a Saturday, this year it makes a debut on the 16th Feb. A full length pursuit race held on top of the tide in the beautiful confines of Chichester Harbour, the event is open to all classes of dinghy and selected keelboats with performance spanning the RS Tera to the International Moth.

Well, perhaps stating the obvious for those that know me, I will be there. Should be a good mixture of boats....loads of Solos, Merlins, RS100s, 200s, 700s, FF's. Moths should make a big appearance as they are training there the following day. A good mix of fast asymmetric, and the Finns should join us from Mengham. there is also a good mix of local youngsters in Lasers, Radials and 29ers. It would be nice to go over 50 boats in year 1.
Bar and snack bar open right through day and evening.
Nick.

Seems a shame to use the Perisher name really.

There's not an awful lot in common between a pursuit sandbank dodging round Chichester harbour and the old race, which was handicaps and on that rather nice racing area just outside Portsmouth harbour mouth. And rigging up in the old town was really a very atmospheric experience, quite different to just another dinghy park.

I am with Jim on this, also watching the floor bow in Portsmouth sailing club when going to the loo below it.
Good luck to Hayling Island sc for running pursuit races in aid of charities but it will not be the Pompey Perisher by any stretch of the imagination.

Having missed the Steamer last week we are up for it. Is there an online entry form or just turn up on the day.

Firstly well done to HISC opening up their amazing facilities to the general sailing public, frankly every time I've ever been near the place I drive home to midlands feeling rather glum- it's an amazing venue, loads of variety for all sorts of sailing disciplines- you guys are very, very lucky to call it home waters and to have the facilities you have.

I'm not old enough to understand the historic anecdotes of some bygone event and how this differs, but just one general question- why the pursuit race?  Do we need more general handicap pursuit races  Confused

The south coast has always felt devoid of winter hcap events - the Bloody Mary is our local! Re HISC and pursuits - we kind of like them and think we are good at running them (well practiced anyway), and we have had some stunning finishes. We work hard at tweaking the handicaps...we have had the Moth on 499 for a year now - I think they were about 550 at the BM.

There is an evnt page on the website, fairly sure you can enter there, but on the day is fine. There is no upper limit. I'll be dusting off the RS100 after a few weeks off.

Jim - no sandbank dodging as it will be high tide, but I do agree about the "different" feel to sailing out of Portsmouth.....basically when you got stuck in a traffic jam anywhere near the club, you just got out and started rigging! Also certainly in the old days it was 2 days.

We chatted to PSC about the name and their plans (none) and both felt it would be nice to resurrect the name.

I think that it is great that the Perisher name has been resurected. It will never be the Pompey Perisher, but good to show some respect to an event that sadly no longer exists.

The South Coast needs more winter events.
