I thought it was time to start a specific winter snow sports thread.  All this talk of sailing in -10... frankly it's insane.

Who does what?  Where you doing it this year?  Post some piccies/videos???  Anything goes...

Myself- off boarding in Les Arcs in a couple of weeks.  I'm the only boarder in a 6 person group, so I need to up my pace a bit more than in the past.  I've done a few sessions at the Snowdome to keep my feet in and I'm riding a longer/faster board for this holiday, so interested to see how I get on.

We'll primarily stick to the pistes and I'm reliable on reds with confidence, but steep blacks and moguls aren't my happiest moments.  It'll be my first time in Les Arcs, previously I've stayed in the Morzine / Les Gets and Avoriaz areas... I'd have been happy to go back tbh, but a couple of our party wanted a change of scene.

Already had a week in Montgenevre over Christmas.
Fantastic snow and no queues at all.

Had a quick blast before Christmas, plenty of it already, Innsbruch, no queues there either mind you it was still chucking it down and a weekday.

I will be going to Adelboden for reasons grf will despise.  IF I'm lucky we will go twice, though sailing instruction does get in the way.   I am still attempting to learn to ski.  I like sledging better.  Even better is sitting in the sun drinking coffee or beer and watching everyone else wear themselves out.

Not sure what it is about Adelboden, are you also going on a learn to be a banker, lawyer, politician course as well then?

Learning to ski is easy, everyone can do it, learning to change the direction in which you are ski-ing is the tricky bit, oh and stopping in style helps.

Even then it's not tricky, they teach it to kids all the time, unlike snowboarding which is for grown ups only.

well contrary to the former post, I only started boarding 'cos I really couldn't ski (or stop to be more precise!)... divine intervention, lady luck?  Maybe... whatever, I'm glad I board rather than ski as it sits better with my windsurfing for general x-over board skills.

clue: there is a Girl Guide Association World Centre in Adelboden.  It is stopping I have most trouble with, the most efficient method I know as yet is simply to fall over.  To change direction I simply stop (ie fall over) then when I have been helped back up again I make sure I set off pointing the other way.  Job done.

My daughter is working in the 3 Valleys area, so my first ever Alpine Winter holiday beckons.
But what should I be practising?

Most people tell me to ski - and so fa the poll indicates thaats the popular option but is it a bit dull?

My Dad is an avid Nordic Skiing fan and loves a week in the middle of no-where (well Norway) trekking across frozen wastes from mountain hut to Mountain Hostel. Not sure I would

Then there's snowboarding - as an (ex) windsurfer it appeals, I think I should get it, and my winsurfing mates all swear its so much better than Skiing. But its gonna hurt until I get half decent.

What to do??

Both have their positives- skiing probably gives you greater access to the mountain sooner, but in my opinion boarding is more relaxed and comfortable.   With the windsurf background you'll also find there's some crossover - especially if you were always stronger on one tack. I'm better on port and ride regular (left fwd) for example... No coincidence.

Here's an idea- go to Castleford and have an intro lesson in both.
