"Surely this means the depreciation is greater for GRP since the Laser more than halved in value (52% drop), where as the Pico's lost 50%?!"

Oops! Yes you are right. Not a very statistically valid sample but I waws just trying to get some idea of relative depreciation.

I think that the Laser 1 and the Laser 2000 are the better boats but of course both are more expensive than the plastic alternatives considered.  My ideal would be a Laser 2000 with an adaptor to take an outboard and a gnav instead of a kicker.  Sadly they don't make one yet.

Rotomould boats still have a look of the "child's sandpit" about them rather than a grown up boat to be proud of.  For performance, durability and cost, however, this looks clearly the way things are going.

One boat I haven't seen mentioned on this thread is the Wayfarer - gasp!!  Obviously not everyone's cup of tea, but they are definitely one of the most adaptable dinghys and have been modernised a lot recently.  You can get them with self draining cockpit, assy kite and a trapeze.  They're obviously also very sea worthy and good for cruising - take an outboard etc.  I'd put money on them being loads quicker than the L2000, which have soooo little sail!

The constant referal to costs is amusing me.  While not up there with horse ownership or motorcycling, sailing (even dinghies) is a great way to use up your money fairly quickly imho.

Treat boat buying like you would car buying.  In my case this would mean letting someone else pay for all the "extras" and take the big depreciation hit that comes with buying anything new.

C'mon Steve, make your mind up!

lol!

Quite right Dopamine.  Enough farting about.  Decision made and Vision to be picked up this weekend. I do also motorcycle, windsurf, am learning to kitesurf and occasionally ride horses as well so plenty of things to spend money on.  Only need more time to play with them!

Yes you can put an assymetric on a  Wayfarer but it's not a boat designed around that format of spinnaker so you are better off with a symmetric. The Wayfarer is a huge dinghy that can not only accomodate your immediate family but also distant relatives and their friends. You can trapese as well but you would be unable to cleat the jib from there. In my experience the Wayfarer with its large sail area will whip the L2k in the really light stuff but as soon as the wind gets to a BF3 the laser is up and away. The L2k's sail is smaller but more efficient in design and can certainly point higher and usually go faster upwind. It's very easy to get overpowered in a Wayfarer which is something to bear in mind when sailing with small crew. As is trying to drag it back up the slipway.

On the plus side you can fit an outboard to it and camp in it if you are really hardy.

The Vision is a sound choice if you want the outboard option. Although I would have chosen the L2k for its fleet size and lighter weight, the Vision gives you a lot of boat for the money. Have fun!
