Hi All
I need to rivet a couple of fittings to an alu boom (specifically on an Enterprise) - I just need some confirmation that the rivets I have are the correct length. The rivets are 4.0x10mm, with a specified grip range of 3.5mm-5.5mm. The fittings are about 1.5mm thick which means the boom wall thickness needs to be 2mm-4mm thick - does this sound about right for an Enterprise boom? Or would I be better off with the 4.0x8mm rivets, with a grip range of 3mm-5mm? Or does it not make that much difference...? And before anyone asks - yes the rivets are stainless steel, and yes there is Tef-Gel going on everything :) Cheers |

A 4mm boom would be astonishing I think, but isn't there an exposed end you can put a calipher on?

Yeah, I did think 4mm would be a bit on the large side...I was more worried about it being less than 2mm making the rivets not hold tight enough...
What did you mean by an exposed end ? Of the rivet...? Cheers |

I think Jim means an exposed end of the boom, so that you can measure the wall thickness of it as 4mm sounds like a very thick boom! |

Needs to sail more...

Cheers - I realised that's what he meant about 30 seconds after I clicked "Post Reply"! There probably is - I just need to get down to the club to have a look at it...

The only other thing you might have to watch out for is if the boom has been sleeved internally to beef up the high load area... Frankly I'd be astonished if this was the case on an Enterprise, but as soon as you've drilled the hole you'll be able to see. I'd be quite suprised if the shorter rivets weren't better, and even more suprised if it makes any great difference!
