I'm after a fast cat, and have found both a 2007 Hobie Tiger and a bang up to date Tornado for the same price, neither is
really raced at my club (there is 1 other F18) and am not planning on doing traveler events with the exception of some long distance racing, basically just wondering which people would go with and why? |

usual helpfullness!
What state is the Tornado is; it's an uber boat. Same qurestion for the Tiger. Getting a bit outdated in F18 terms but either would be fun; if you fancy long distance racing the T should be quicker. Where are you based? |

Tornado is in extremely good state which may swing it for me, im based at Rutland so its a bit of a trek to the coast for
distance stuff but it would probably be a year at least before I looked at doing that due to uni. i realise the tiger is getting old but its the 1st non dart hawk ive seen thats in my price range. Edited by Quagers |

It's a bit horses for courses I'm afraid. Personally I would have the Tornado, absolutely awesome boats to sail ( but I would say that), but it can be a pain to trail around and rig/derig. It's not that bad when you get a system and get used to doing it. All my sailing at the moment is events so I build and dismantle my boat quite a bit. It should be good for the long distance racing and there are still a number of active boats around the east and south coast. Assuming I get off my a*rse there will be two at Datchet which isn't a million miles from you if you want someone to sail against or some advise. The tiger would also be a good choice. Gets you into fast cats and kites. Can be trailed built up and a good racing scene. you will find most cat friendly clubs will have an F18 or two floating around. The potential for very big fleet racing is there too if you want to go to Europe.
Look at both boats on their merits and try sailing both in a bit of a breeze. Drifting around is not going to give you any feel for the boat. Whatever you choose you won't regret the speed and thrill of big cats |

There is usually a hobie tiger that does the club racing at Rutland, also quite a few Shadows that sail regular, although I saw a couple of A class cats out last time, I would go and ask the cat sailors at the club what there plans and
recommendation are so you all end up with the same class. Edited by sten |

I'd go Tornado. Still THE cat to own and sail. If it's in good nick it'd be hard to beat.

Tornado for the long distance stuff (I just have one which is ready set up full carbon and road trailer for sale) As for taking apart technically the F18s should be dismantled for towing, although none that I know are. As said above its horses for courses, round the can, short course racing the F18, plus they have a large circuit. Long Distance stuff my choice is the T, much more comfortable What is your budget? |
