We're off up to Rutland next weekend for the Laser Asymm
Open.

Last years event was our first ever race spent entirely
in survival mode.

This year we've moved on some and my sights are set a bit
higher than just completing all the races.

Does anybody have any tips they would like to share for
racing at Rutland? I've been reading 'Wind Tactics'
lately. Wind convergence/divergence should (according to
the book) mean the left side is windier. Does this really
happen?

OH that's OK then, I can tell you

Seriously, there is often a wind bend around the end of the peninsula and various wind shadows related to hills and trees etc.  There are a couple of disasterous weedy patches just now that you need to avoid.

But all depends on the wind direction, wind strength and, dare I say it, the race officer

There are also two bubblers out on the water that Anglian water use to airate the water - I'm told it is OK to sail across/through the bubbles and that they don't remove too much buoyancy that the boats sink

The wind bends down the 2 valleys that make the lake. Sailing over the bubbles is slow.

Its almost a half hour sail to the race area.

Pre book the campsite.

Dont underestimate the queues for breakfast.

Last time we were there they were too late opening the galley in the morning so breakfast had to be got elsewhere.  Opening the galley 1 hour before racing is not ideal!

True- but then the breakfasts they sell are somewhat disappointing in my opinion.

Rutland is a nice piece of water to sail on IMHO but definitely make sure you have your own food as a back up. If you are sailing down by the dam wall it can take a while to get there if the wind is light.

Avoid the concrete towers (sounds obvious but I guy a crewed for did manage to hit one......)

Aside from that enjoy, chat to other boat owners and pick their brains 9and be prepared for them to pick yours).
