I've just been for a run, and my left knee hurts now.
Can't go to the doctor, might get swine flu there. Googling for information takes too long. What's the best place to turn to? The Y&Y forum! Experts abound there! So what's up with my knee then, and how do I save it from future pain and wobblyness? All I did was a mere 20 minutes on a nice flat canal towpath (I don't run much, can you tell?). |

I went to this place nr Maidstone, Newnham Court, they had a machine you
ran over which takes an imprint of the pressure of your foot as you run. They then sorted me with a new set of trainers. No problem since. I dare say there are other specialist running shps near you that will have a similar device. It's to do with the way your foot angulates on the landing and take off apparently.. |

Try horizontal jogging - that won't hurt your knee (unless you are into something weird!) |

Having a look at your feet is a good point. I have good windsurf feet - wide and flat As an interim measure I was always told to raise it and apply cold packs to the knee, but in short bursts. That might help alleviate any swelling or iritation. Or there is always the Flintoff NASA system, but I doubt you could afford that! Otherwise my useful advice would be not to run - go swimming or cycling. Much better for your joints. |

You are probably over-pronating. I get it too. The ankle is meant to rotate a bit when your foot lands to absorb some of the shock. However, yours is overdoing it and not taking enough of the impact away. Thus the knees are getting it. Loads of solutions. Swimming and cycling fit the bill. Also try a new pair of shoes. Asics are very good and some of their range are specifically aimed at over-pronators. Get them from a good sports shop with a treadmill so you can have your gait assessed. Horizontal jogging is fine but I've never tried it on a canal path. Not sure I could manage 20 minutes these days either. |

1) Go to a proper running shop and get fitted for some decent trainers as Grumpfs says 2) Increase the volume slowly; 10% per week max |

Yeah, I avoid tarmac wherever possible, grass gives more cushioning.
Any tricks for strengthening knee/ankle joints? Walking on uneven surfaces I guess? Lunges? |
