I'd go 8:1 asap as it makes the sail a lot easier to control.  You need to pull as hard as possible on the 8:1at times. 

It's an easy upgrade - buy a double block and pass a line from this through the cunningham cringle and hook a loop on the tail onto the mainsheet cleat. Tie the existing single block to the mast foot with a loop of dyneema so it just clears the kicker and rethread the existing control line.  If you're lucky this will be just long enough. If not you can play a bit with the the length of the line which you hook onto the mainsheet cleat to give you some more slack.

I will look at upgrading the cunningham. I currently sail near barton which is next to theriver humber on one of the clay pits there. However I hope to move to filey next year or as soon as ive got the hang of the basics.

did you sail the miracle open there if so what boat were you in?
