High - designed for full size adults, not for kids like Vago etc. - extra fun when kite is up - refined and recent design, not some ancient 50's or 60's design. - Well mannered - Maybe a slight lack of power upwind in little winds.

Hi
Me again! Since i was last on the forum, i have done some further resurch based on your input, for which i must thank you, in to a dinghie that i can predominently sale two up but occasionally on my own. There are as you say very few! So here it is, the million dollar question! Which is the best, the Laser 2000 or the RS400?

Neither. It really depends what you want the boat to do. They might look similar, but they're quite different boats.

Having sailed 400s a lot I reckon they would be a pig singlehanded. Its one of the few two handers at our club that I've virtually never seen sailed singlehanded (other than inadvertently!).
Haven't sailed 2000s enough to have much of an opinion, but as its not so much of a full on race boat you'd expect it to be a bit more docile. |

Define "the best"? For when you want to sail on your own: Laser 2000. For gybing in strong winds with the kite up: Laser 2000. For light wind creeping: RS400. For kids and small crews: Laser 2000. For racing against other RS400's: RS400. For racing against other Laser 2000's: Laser 2000. If you want to do the open meeting circuit with a relatively inexperienced crew: Laser 2000. If you want a family oriented boat: Laser 2000. If you want a cheaper boat from 8 or 10 years ago: RS400. If you want to race at Penzance in the National Champs: RS400 ('cos Laser 2000 was there last year!). Get both, and make it easy on yourself! Or buy one for 12 months. Then sell and buy the other for 12 months. Then sell and buy the one that YOU think is the best. |

Because you cannot realistically sail a 400 on your own, especially given your admission of being a relative beginner, it has to be the L2k.
When you sail on yr own, will you be racing or just bimbling for pleasure? Interested to get an insight as to how you have arrived at these final two. Because apart from the double-handed hiking asymmetric tag, they have little in common. |

to be honest io would vote for the vago, its designed to be raqced 2 up or one up even doing the circuit. 400 has high sheet loads and needs a lot of weight in any wind the 2000 is a very heavy boat to move about and if it goes over you will struggle to right it if you are under 16 -17 stone.

That, my friend, is utter rubbish. At about 13 stone I could bring it up in a force 3 with the kite up and helm faffing in the cockpit no problem. |

The centre has recently bought two Vago's. I intend to sail one single handed on the Wednesday Night races, should be a laugh and will report back as to how I get on. Back to the OP, I believe a 2000 is the better of the two to sail Single handed, can't remember if you can reef the main like you can a Stratos, if not I am sure a sailmaker could do something for you. |

The 2000's main is et up for single line reefing- works really well. Brings the head down to the spinnaker halyard hoist point, so you still get the support.
