First off - hello, newbie here...*waves*

Back to the gripe in hand....

I am currently re-validating RYA SI dinghy and powerboat instructor, that are 18mths 'out of date' after a break from outdoor instructing.

Firstly can ANYONE get the RYA shop, membership on line or forum to work? Because I have tried for a few days, and none appear to work. I registered with the site 3 weeks ago, no activated registration. I emailed. No reply.

Then.

RYA membership £39. Revalidation, per certificate £40. All the new books/resources to ensure I am upto date and informed  - estimated (as the RYA shop is not working) 6-10 books, all at £8.99, sorry £7.49 with that *generous* member discount. So, I am looking at the thick end of £200...?

Now while I realise that I will hopefully be once again making a living from this (and other sports), it seems more than a tad on the pricey side. I mean, those costs are at BCU levels...but at least the BCU give me free instructors resources and course manuals.....not charge for them.

hmmmmm. feel free to shoot me down....

Matt

Revalidation is free as a member isn't it? There's a cost given for revalidation pretty much just to make you join instead.

If that is the case, the forms do not make that clear - it suggests a fee, no exceptions. I called the RYA today, and they did not suggest that it was included either...

Are we talking about this form?

I'll admit it could be worded better, but I assure you that where it says:

When you return this form, the following
items must be enclosed:

  • Instructor certificate(s)

  • Payment of £40 or a completed membership application form (nonmembers
    only)

the ENTIRE second item applies to non-members only, not just the bit after "or". I revalidated last year.

I have a similar problem having let my certificates expire thinking that I would not use them again. Then i joined a new club and they asked me to take on the SI role to teach the clubs children. I checked with Mount Batten sailing centre and it would cost me £800 to revalidate all the certificates I had! Sorry kids.
