60knts, How far away??

Okay, so when will the 60 knt barrier will be broken?

Kiters are already peaking at 57.5knts in as quoted 'a nice breeze!'

Windsurfers only are now hitting 44.1knts but quickly catching.

But what about Hydroptere who's now preparing for their speed attempt?

 

What do you guys reakon? I'm backing Hydrotere as it has more chance of holding the speed over the 500m distance!

I personally don't think Hydroptere. The big issue is cavitation on the foils, which is why so many craft are peaking in same sort of region where it starts to occur. The kite boards don't really use foils AIUI, just using the board surface for leeway reduction, so have less of an issue.

The windsurfing record is actually 48.7 kts but has only increased by 4 kts or so over the past 15 yrs. You can't really argue with the power to weight ratio that kite surfing offers.

I beleive that kite surfers do use foils for speed sailing. I'm not sure about cavitation being the issue. In theory you have to be going a lot faster before it comes into play.

Not an expert so shoot me if I'm wrong.

The outright speed sailing record over 500 metres is 48.7 knots, set by Finian Maynard in 2005.

The speeds the kites are claiming are GPS results which can be affected in the same way as an often talked about competition we had on this website! The fastest kite speed so far is 47.92 knots set by Alexandre Caizergues in October 2007.

kites cant hopld the speed as in lulls they slow right down but a windsurfer can

Momentum. Kites lose it all in lulls, not sure why, maybe to do with the drag caused by the kite, but not sure if thats right!

More volume in the board, i'm guessing! Also cammed sails also hold the shape.

Mark,

The other day Martin van Meurs hit 50knts of Southend at the Ray but it was only a gps peak and they said that it was actually a choppy day by the Rays standards!!

But mark is right, it might be unnoficial but kiters are up over 50.
