Hi all Could anyone explain to me the difference between the Garmin Foretrex and Forerunner ranges, would they both tell you how quick your going, is one "better" (more suited to sailing) than the other? I know that the 201 versions have Li-ion rechargable batteries wheras the 101s don't but don't know the differences between Forerunner and Foretrex Can't seem to tell the difference Thanks |

I seem to remember the forerunner doesn't do speed in knots but I'm not certain. Most people I know got the Foretrex instead as its a sealed unit and less likely to have leaking problems.

I don't think the Forerunner can do VMG (Velocity Made Good), the Foretrex certainly can. The Foretrex has a count down / count up timer as well which the Forerunner does not.
aardvark_issues is correct, the Forerunner cannot do speed in knots - I was comparing my Foretrex to another guy's Forerunner on Sunday. The Forerunner is aimed at firmly at the running / cycling market and has functions that you'd never use on the water (eg pace in minutes per mile, race against a virtual partner - ie yourself the last time you ran or cycled the same route etc), but both will measure your speed. The strap on the Forerunner looks a bit better though - the Foretrex is only held on with two watch spring pins to it's strap. One of mine went missing at the weekend & fortunately I spotted it before I lost the whole unit. There are quite a few posts on some of the windsurfing forums about people losing the whole unit because the pins fail during high speed wipeouts. I've just ordered a small Aquapac with a velcro armband to keep mine in - apparently it will float in this even if it does come off your arm. |
