    Posted: 01 Sep 07 at 12:37pm

I have a previously-folded sail that I been rolling around my upper mast section after sailing.  I've just bought a length of PVC downpipe to use instead which will be a lot easier to handle as it is very light-weight.

Could anyone please tell me...

1. What is the best way to attach the sail using the tack and clew cringles and I think a length of thin shock cord at each end?

2. Also what is the optimum length to cut the pipe?

3. Is it a good idea to drill "breathing" holes all the way down the length of the pipe or is this a waste of time?

Any other advice/help to a newbie Laser sailor much appreciated.....

Thanks,

Al

Drill a small hole in each end of the pipe, thread a piece of schockcord/eleastic through and tie a knot in each end. Cut a narrow slot in end of pipe to take the end of the elastic. Thread the elastic through the tack & clew holes, and then put elastic in slot.
You want the pipe long enough so the elastic is tight when threaded onto sail and back to pipe. 2.7m rings a bell when I did mine 5 yrs ago (but I might be imagining that!) - just measure the foot of the sail and add a bit on! Plastic drainpipe does the job, and get a long sail bag to put the whole lot in when sail is rolled.
I never bothered with holes along the pipe, but then i always dried my sail in the garage if it was wet.

Working on the basis that you can always shorten but you can't really stick a bit back on, I've followed your advice smurfer except I cut the pipe to 3M length.

(Actually I think the 2.7M you remember is probably the width of the sail across the foot, or maybe clew hole to tack hole).

I've tried it with my good sail at home and it works a treat - tomorrow I'll use it for my club racing sail and knock minutes off my de-rigging/packing up time and get back to the clubhouse superquick... oops, I just remembered, I'm too near the back of the fleet to get to the head of the lunch queue even with my quick sail-rolling

Oh well, I'm just gonna have to improve my sailing

Thanks very much smurfer!

Al

Folding the sail won't cause it the slightest bit of harm.  Laser sails are made from pretty soft dacron.

Thanks Roy but the old training/club racing sail I'm using hasn't got well-defined folds any more and I find it easier somehow to roll it.

I tried the downpipe today and it was a great improvement on using the top mast section; not only because of the weight difference but also because the pipe at 3 metres is quite a bit shorter than the mast.

Cheers,

Al
