I borrowed a Velocitek at the Cerub Natoinals.

Pluses...

Big digits-easy to read, unlikely to lose it and I think it floats.  Tuch sensitive buttons are big and work well with cold hands.

Minuses

Just too big for a dinghy really, not rechargeable (eats batteries!), you have to open it right up and plug a cable into the PCB to get the data off it.  Oh, and a lot of them leaked...

Velocitek speedos have been the standard prize for Tacticat regattas (http://www.tacticat.com).

Last year sailors winning the big events received an S10. This year we've changed to the better SC-1. First SC-1s will be awarded to national champions this month ( Thursday OCT 25, 21:00 BST, Monday 29 OCT, 21:00  AEST) and at the World Tacticat Series to be held 3-11 Nov during the Barcelona boat show.

So far we're satisfied with the gadgets, sailors receiving it haven't had any major problems using it mostly as a training tool.

In Tacticat all boats have a built-in SC-1 (virtual one as virtual are the boats), it is shown with the V key.

S 10 - They use (rechargable) AAA batteries - mine last 10 hrs of sailing use. - enough for a weekend open on one set of batteries.

And having the USB connection inside means there are no leaky sockets.

I've had a leak in mine- but due to a bit of sand in the seal. A flush with hot fresh water - no problems since.

How much is the SC-1? There's a new device called Nauteek which has come up this summer which looks quite nice, though probably a bit more pricey.
