First 3 Heats today guys in what was a classic belmont bay NE'er. 25knots (and some) with about 25 starters and roughly 10 finishers.

Thanks to all the guys who helped us out with rig tensions and tips, it helped a lot, BUT, it wasn't quite enough to get us around cleanly. I had a few mates who went out and watched us on they're yacht,(they had a good 25-28 knots on they're wind guage most of the arvo) and they marked us down for 7 swims (not counting flip-flops). I think we crossed off every style of wipeout on the 49er list.

Cartwheel bearaway 1

   "      "    out of gybe 2

back-flip 1

chinese gybe after completing original gybe and then dropping main 1

and gybes in general another 2.

The only thing that makes me feel a bit better is that Chris Nicho and Euan Mcnicoll had 3 swims aswell.

Well more of the same forecast tomorrow so hopefully we're a bit better for the hitout( but the body certainly dont think so at the moment.

Nathan Outeridge and his crew were the stars for the day getting around the whole day faultlessly and capitalising on Nikko's and others mistakes.

Good effort that man !!  At least you gave it a punt and we look forward to the video

I was under the impression that 49'ers kind of broke in those conditions (or at least those conditions are top of the shop as far as windspeed is concerned) so if the boat's still in one piece then extra result !!

We await tomorrows missive.  Good Luck

Hey Flano,

I think I know your crew - He has got heaps of 49er experience and really helped me getting into niners. Pretty good effort for your first attempt at 49ers.

Cheers,

Steve

Thanks Pierre, there's a bloke currently attempting to put together a doco on the road to Beijing so if I can convince him to give us a couple of snippets, I will definitely put them up on the website.

Hey Steve, Rick used to sail 49ers about 6 or 7 yrs ago with Matt Crockett. The last big regatta I think he sailed was Melbourne (might have been the worlds) in 1999. So he's been out of them for a fair while.

Today saw a much friendlier NE'er ranging from around 12-22 knots, much more comfy than yesterday and we managed to survive with no swims.

Racked up a couple of 8th's a 7th and a 5th with Nikko and Outteridge clearing out and being the only one's left in contention.

The other 16ft skiff blokes that are going well are Greg and Bretto who are currently sitting in 5th.

I'll keep you's posted, am having a sh*t load of fun. Their a perfect olympic boat because they combine the tactical part of sailing with fitness and great boat handling skills. It still brings a smile to my face every time I think of the bearaway we survived yesterday when the boat was smoking, the mainsheet was at it's absolute max and the gunwale line was skimming the surface of the water, teetering on the edge.

I'm 31 now, and I don't think I've been as scared to gybe a boat as I was yesterday since I first jumped into a boat at 8. We must have stuffed up about 9 times out of 10, but, that one we got right, made it all worth while.

Flano,

It is a different guy. I thought your crew was Rob Bridge from here in Brisbane. It looks like over half the fleet hasn't been able to finish most races. Must be a bit breezy!

Racing concluded today with another stonking NE'er with the starter pulling the pin after the 2nd race with the breeze starting to hit 25 knots and still building.

We were running 7th before today but swum on the last gybe with 20 metres to go to the finish which relegated us back to 9th.

Pretty happy with the result and the whole experience.

The winner overall was Outteridge who had eleven 1sts and a 2nd and 3rd placing. Handled the boat exceptionally in the heavier stuff but was lightning quick in the other conditions aswell.

Chris Nicholson ran 2nd with Will Philllips 3rd

Well done chap.  Good result in trying conditions. That bloke Outteridge had obviously done it before.
