![]() The London boat show is deffinatly not as good as the dinghy show for looking at boats you might choose. Although the dignhy show is a while away yet. |

The reason I said London boat show is because you get an idea of what boats are available and see them. You can then go away and research before going to Dinghy Show in two months time, to ask the right questions and yes, see more classes.

Apologies for sounding pompous earlier but it is all those decisions about which way to go that are difficult to learn if you can't stay upright. I just feel its all image and no content if you can't make a boat go in the right direction but look flash hanging off the wire.

I had a similar predicament but did not have many choices in 2nd hand boats so went for a new 29er which was available where I live. I can certainly relate to the sentiments shared earlier. Much swimming with little sailing in between unless you get serious coaching from someone who can sail with you and slow things down so you can learn. You can't do that on a single-handed boat so I would suggest you get a double-hander so that is possible to single hand. Then you can go through the learning curve phase with ease. Assumption here is that you can get some one to sail with you for a while to help you learn of course. Make sure to have fun. Thats what its all about. Good luck. |

To be perfectly honest I have not totally singlehanded it yet but getting there. I sail with my 10 year old daughter who is an able Optimist sailor but is not heavy or strong enough to fulfill all crewing duties (ie hoise kite etc). So you can call mine 1.5 handed sailing I guess... Still having her onboard does help me a lot. As I see it, launching & recovering singlehanded might be a challenge. Also capsize recoveries would be tough without the benefit of a second person to balance for you or get scooped and tidy up tillers etc. Not having to manage mainsheet while trying to learn how to helm from the wire is also a big bonus. There are some good suggestions on this forum and SA forum for mainsheet sviwel cleat systems as well as tiller tamers etc. As I get more comfortable with the boat I will consider these options. Meanwhile the 29er is not really designed for optimal single-handed experience. The location & angle of the cunningham, vang & jib luff tension controls are optimized for crew. If you're on your own and need to play with these you need to be quick and accurate or you swim. Hope this helps. Cheers.
