Funny to think that all those now barely remembered classes were once the hot new thing of the moment. So which boats will be puzzling those looking at the CVRDA quiz of 2056?

Most of them now have the name written across the mainsail, which would be a giveaway! Telling any of the rotomoulded boats apart would be a challenge, though, and the Galaxy, Beta and Comet Race haven't had to wait till 2056 - we could put them in a quiz now and not many would work out what they are!

Many of the classes that turn up at CVRDA events haven't really gone away.

Merlins, 12s, 14s etc all have classic/vintage wings....and some classes put on seperate events for the older boats. If you look round the average sailing club you will see some of the more non-mainstream classes, OK they may not be raced every weekend and they may just be used for pottering but they are out there.

The CVRDA provides events for these boats to race and the boats that turn up include Merlins, 12s, 14s, Finns, Wayfarers, Flying 15s, International Canoes, Mirrors, Solos, Scorpions, Hornets, Cherub, Fireflys etc.....all classes still going today. The only "rule" is that they have to be designed before 1965 and the boat has to be over 25 years old, and we use PY numbers from 1965 and have sepeate wings (and PYs) for vintage, classic and old boats.

The CVDRA has also had a number of Pegasus turn up and the Pegasus Nationals has been run at the CVRDA annual reggata. We've also seen some of the more rarer classes race at events, the Jollyboat, the Unit, the Spearhead, the ToY and there's also a classic cat wing.....you have to see the 20' Shark in action.

What is great though, is that more boats are being discovered and dragged along to events.

So in the future will we see classes such as the Laser EPS, MX-Ray etc coming along as "lost classes"? They don't fit in with the current rules but in years to come  the rules may change.

Anyone for Classic Laser racing in 2056....?
