Andy

Look forward to seeing you.  What skiff did you try to enter which GWSC rejected - an 18'?

Grafham have only let the 18 come to the ovington memorial in the last few years. I can see their piont, takes up loads of room, is a pig if you need to rescue someone, and scares the pants off slower boats, who you generally can't see from the helm. Having said that, only boat i have not had a collision in, except the solution, but only had that out once.  Not had it on the water the last year, as one of the guys has gone to oz, and work getting too busy to do it justice. They take a whole lot of training to be safe on a race course.

I remember an 18' taking part in the racing a few years ago.  I think the helm was fairly new to the beasties, capzised and tied up the two rescue boats for the majority of the race, think they banned them at that point.  Great shame as there's few boats more impressive on the water - guaranteed to clear all boats out of the way!

We went to the Birkett trophy last year on Ulswater and there were 7 of them  Fantastic to watch but a bit scary to meet on the line.

My favourite comment overheard on a line with 200 boats was from the helm of one of these monsters to a crew member"find me a gap to gybe"

!8s where great and mad at the Birkett, one demasted a 4000 in a port/ starboard incident , the 18 was on starboard though. Great because we overtook one in a RS200 .
