Rob, did the 3k you sailed have a kicker or a Gnav? Did it have a centre or aft bridle? Did it have off-the-boom sheeting? The class has come on a lot in the last couple of years and is set for a real upturn now that we've got rid of the original bugs.

Maybe I'm being unfair, as I have only ever sailed in and against the old ones, and I know they can be fun- I have sailed one singlehanded too, but I did find it very uncomfortable, with or without crew. I also remember them being sticky in the light stuff, which is what we sail in most in a normal English summer (not this year though! Windiest season I can remember!!)

Re the original question, I would still say that if they want to downsize from a 400, then the 200 is the best bet, or if they want to add a trapeze, go for the 500.

It's true, 3k's aren't brilliant in the light stuff, but what trapeze boat is? As for the 500, first reports are of a big step out onto the wire from the deep floor and gouging non-slip. And would you rather pull up 50-odd kg of epoxy V3k hull at the end of the day, or 80-odd kg's of polyester 500 (or 78 kg's of 200 for that matter)?
