Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and
oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer. |

A reduction in friction of 40% starting at what point, though? Sanded with a belt sander with 40 grit on it? If 40% off an unsanded gelcoat finish, I'd like to know what reduction 1200 grit and car polish has?! |

I suspect that on a small section of hull surface then 40% reduction in friction could be acheived. For the hull as a whole ploughing through the water though then the difference would be far far smaller. When I was competatively racing kayaks then we'd wax our boats before big races and the difference was easily noticable. But I too have an image of entire championship fleets piling this stuff on before hitting the water and I dont like it much... |

It is "up to 40%" which isn't quite the same. Also, there are three forms of drag: friction, form and induced (vortices spinning off foil tips). How much of a boat's drag is actually friction? I don't know, but Bethwaite has a description of drag tests where the difference between a washed and unwashed hull was in the region of 2%. Also, drag from the rig and sails (which Bethwaite was not measuring) plays a major role in boat performance upwind. The point is even if it is "up to 40%", it is up to 40% of some quite small proportion of the overall drag.

A source I was looking at yesterday indicates about 60% of a 505's resistance at high planing speeds was skin friction. I don't think that was looking at upwind sailing so induced was negligible but there's wavemaking, form and friction as well. And the proportions vary a great deal according to speed.
All the sources I can find (including the guys who design CAD CAM programmes, VPPs, designers, academics, etc) also underline that no one really knows, of course. Still, I don't know about you but we ban pollutants and this may come into that category. Edited by CT249 |

It is all about Nano particle technology. It is all very interesting reading about the stuff. Basically the Holmenkol range got released into the UK market about 6 weeks ago. The AquaSpeed and Sport Polish, use nano particles which repells water. Therefore the water doesn't stick to the hull and meaning the hull has less friction with the water. Holmenkol also make lubricate, called LubenSpeed which also uses nano particles which is awesome. It doesn't rub off like holt lube and mclube and lasts ages. |

sounds like it will cost a fortune if you have to do the whole hull every day. i can only see the realy competitive people bothering, that'll be the oppie fleet. and also i recall reading somwhere that friction caused by the hull rubbing against the water is hardly anything. its much more important to not a nice shape hull rather than a smooth finish. |

Not sure about that... But ive heard licking your freshly coated hull enables the nano particles to enter your bloodstream and cure you of everything from the common cold to cancer within 6-8 working days. |
