Hey, im making a mountainboard deck with foam cores and laminates for my gcse tech project and i reckoned it would be similar to making foils for a boat. anyone  got any tips? my main interest is the difference between different types of glass cloth. if anyone can give me some info id be grateful.

I would of said that your board would have more in common with a pair
of skis or snowboard. As you need the board to flex as part of the
suspension system and not break as well as being strong enough to take
impacts. And as getting this right first time is unlikely I would go for
glass cloth as it will cost you less and is less fragile. Maybe some
selective carbon but as weight isn't super important, i.e you are going to
bolt some big tyres and trucks on it and chuck yourself down a hill, so I
don't think I'd bother.

I would also go for some sort of laminated wood core to which you can
attach foam around and bolt your trucks into. As for how exactly, who
know's? got an old one that's broken. cut it in half and have a look. Or do
some samples and test them.

you might want to try some kite forums as well.

[QUOTE=Jack Sparrow]My suggestion for wood core seems to be correct...

or you could just fo it like this:

cheers, the first one seems to be making sense. the second one is useless as i am making a small lightwieght board for freestyle (spins and flips etc) i think i may go for a dense foam core with some thin plywood around it then lay up around that. anyone need to correct me?

From what I've heard, most ski makers are returning to wood core skis. The flex of the core is more consistent and they don't break as easily as the foam skis. One thing to think of is that if you are looking for speed down a hill, weight is more a friend than a foe. If you want to make them stiffer, laminate wood with carbon and or kevlar between the wood layers.

Just foam and carbon will break very easily. Carbon does not like transverse loads at all and will fail almost all the time. Carbon works well in compression or tension though.

A simple layup with wood, kevlar, and epoxy would probably work fine.
