I'm looking for a dinghy to use on a lake in Italy.
I used to sail in a 470 about 15 years ago, now I would like to sail again with my wife and my child (he's 8). I would like something which can be sailed singlehanded, with just my wife, and with the whole family. The vision seemed the right choice, but I've never seen one live (almost everybody on my lake sail lasers and snipes, but my wife is not interested in racing, and I would prefer something with a spi). Then I started considering the laser vago, I think I like it a lot, but is there enough space for 3 in it (considering that we are not exactly giants as I'm 1.72 and the rest of the family scales according to my height)? Has somebody ever tried these boats and can tell me something about them (according to the sellers I contacted it seems that everything they sell is perfect for me...)? Many thanks (and sorry for the poor English) Francesco |

Vago would probably be your best bet. U could always add a trap to a laser 2k and single that? Depends if u want a family crusing boat etc

Hi Francesco I own a Vago, it's a fun boat to sail and easily sailed single handed, however it is smaller than the Vision and I would check that you can all three get in and sail comfortably. The best option is the XD, which comes with the large Mylar mainsail, single trapeze wires and a bigger genacker, to which adding the smaller standard mainsail is a good option to give easier boat handling when it is windy. I've had mine since last August and enjoy sailing it double and single handed, but you really need a test sail to make sure it is for you. Sumo |

Well, the laser 2k seems a bit too expensive for me, unless I find a good used one. And then I'm not so fond of maintenance, so I'm attracted by plastic (my old 470 was a sort of nightmare to me, I like to remember that I own a boat only when I'm sailing it). On a site somewhere on the web I found a description of the vago saying that it is cartoppable, but was not able to find this kind of information on the official site (and on the sthe Italian vendor ther is no information at all on the vago). Do you know if this is true?
BTW, the Topper Magno is 20 cm shorter than the vago, and I saw a picture on the Y&Y review with 4 people in it, so maybe the vago is big enough for me, but of course I should try it. thanks for your answers, Francesco. |

I haven't seen anything about the Vago being cartoppable and to be honest I think it is too large to be put on a roof rack! |

I reckon youd probibly get away with cartopping it on a decent sized
car, as long as it wasnt a hot day and you dont do the straps too tight

... and corner very slowly with slippery plastic and no lip on the gunnals (spelling?) you'll find it hard work to manhandle a Vago onto the roof I'd say i'd go for a second hand L2000 with combi (for the same price as a Vago) ... a great class with growing fleets at many clubs (see www.laser2000.lasersailing.com) |

Well, the possibility of putting it on the roof of a car would have been just a plus, since I don't think I would move the boat very often, let's say 5 km from home to the lake in April, then the way back in October, but if moving it were easy enough I could consider the idea of a week somewhere else with the boat .
Anyway the combi solution is not viable in Italy. You are not allowed to use a combi on the roads here. You've gotta have a light trailer to put the boat in the water, and a much heavier one (and much more expensive, I haven't seen one valued less than 1000 euro second hand) to use on the roads. This is the page were I saw the icon of a vago on a car: http://www.ostriamarine.com/laser/vago.htm I really should try these two boats, but until the 10th of June I'm home with a broken Achille's tendon, so I'm trying to collect the more information I can over the Internet. |

Ouch. I did exactly the same thing last year. It's really painful when it snaps and a complete pain while you're forced to be inactive. |
