We all know the Portsmouth Yardstick system isn't perfect. But is it the best we have? Interested to hear if there are alternatives and if they are any better.

Great Lakes?
The American (DPN) system seems to have different numbers for different wind strengths, which probably has some merit. I think the main problem with PY is the very favourable number for Solos

Great Lakes is basically the same as PY but optimised for one specific type of water (large inland lakes). The US system was 'archived' last year as US Sailing have amalgamated their handicap system with the RYA's.

Lol, thanks Ian. Never heard of it. Will take a look.
P.s. The Solo handicap is one of the positives of the system in my book ![]() |

Thanks Sam, I heard they were integrating the two. I'll have a look into the Great Lakes system
