How does your club award series points for being on duty? Mine doesnt, but I'm organisimg a one off series in November and I don't want to penalise people on duty who are racing in the rest of the series.

Average points excluding DNCs. We use average of all races in the series, so the points total will change as the series progresses.

We do exactly the same, it does mean a few will have their calculators out as the series progresses. |

Just to be clear is it the average of the points the sailor has scored or the average of yhe points available?
If the former then someone who has sailed with few other people would do better from a duty than someone who has sailed against many people assuking both are mid fleet finishers. |

Average of what the sailor scoreline other races. Very easy to overthink this, but to my mind the object of the exercise is not to try and guess what result the competitor might have had in that particular race, but to give a figure for what they might have scored with one more race in the series.
The alternative would be to hold something like a protest hearing in which you say, well in that weather Bill is usually ahead of John who was 5th but behind Jane who was 9th and there lies insanity... Edited by JimC - 05 Oct 14 at 6:41pm |

Average of all races in the series except DNCs is what we use to.

Wish I could convince our club to do this - most of my previous clubs have.

The system I have been told to use is the average of all the races that count minus the number of duties done. Thus in a 16 race series with 9 to count, where somebody misses two races through doing duties, you take the average of the best 7 results and give that to the dutyman x 2 to make up the 9 results. If he or she has only finished 6 races in the series than of course you count one DNC in the average.
