I'm converting my older I14 to have chainplates for the shrouds and lowers since the level of adjustability and amount of ropes around the bottom of the boat is out of control and unnecessary!

There seem to be quite a few chainplate options with very different max loads. I saw some in a local chandlery by holt and they were £7.99 with a max load of 850kg. Online I’ve found some the same size (again by holt) that are “heavy duty” that are £18.50.

Anyone have any idea what kinds of loads the shrouds are subject to on a boat like a 14? The current rope setup gives no clues, it’s 4mm but that is about all I know since the boat is fairly new to me.

The heavy duty ones are used on the 49er, but the normal ones are used on RS800. I would say the I14 is on cross over. Personally I would put HA4772HT which are the heavy duty ones which use 6mm pin.

I just found this:

"The HA4772HT is made from 16 gauge stainless steel, has larger 6mm pins and extra reinforcement at the base to withstand the dual loads of twin shroud rigs such as the 49er and B14."

The uppers on my boat terminate together at the base of the mast with a purchase system which is led back to the middle of the cockpit so I may be OK with the normal ones.

i think you would be better with the bigger ones, is the boat a penultimate boat?

If you're talking about goosenck height loweres then I'd have separate plates for them. The angles are so very different. As for the main shrouds I wouldn't even consider the lightweight ones.
