Hi all, I have managed to gain the use of an RS 400 to race next year, it belongs to someone else who keeps it at Netley. I dont know the dinghy circuit very well and wanted to know which is the best club around the south coast for racing the RS 400 which also has a good social scene for adults? Also, is the RS 400 circuit a good one? How many boats compete at national events etc?? Thank you in advance. Ben |

Tow the boat a mile down the road to Weston and I would sail it their.
The 400 has a good circuit and it is a Garda year next year so should be special. |

yep, weston would be good. They've got a few at Lee-on-solent as well. Lymington is worth looking at too. Very good fleet at parkstone but might be a bit far? (Lee/weston/parkstone all had open events in the season just gone). Circuit is excellent. Super competitive but a friendly enough bunch. There will be plenty of events not far from you... (not many birds tho... I think there was just under sixty at the champs which is a bit down (but it was august bank holiday and we did have to drive to north wales!)... it's Mounts Bay next year which should get a few more boats and should be a good event.

Thanks, I have looked at weston and it seems very good. What is the social scene like and the average age of the crews?? No birds hey.... boo hoo Also, what is level of the crews like, I assume its not like trying to race a Finn... I am hoping to train my girlfriend up as crew and she is a complete novice! In fact Im not exactly the seasoned dinghy professional myself! |

you can sail to weston from netley in no time at all if there is any
wind. I sailed at netley over the summer and it's a really nice piece
of water, you just have to try and keep out the way of the fast cats as
they motor backwards and forwards! The racing scene at netley isn't
exactly a big affair but they are a nice bunch.

They seem to sail with a big range of weight with close racing at least at club level which is ideal for you. I've seen a few mixed crew (hermaphroditic) boats trucking upwind with flat sails, poining lower but making less leeway. The main sheet hoop lends itself to good twist control but as with many boats the kicker cunningham are a sod for err, the less wookie like crews. Although not my own boat, I've actually won a pair of club races helming and crewing in them --but ok , we were 30 stone up It just stuck to the water upwind high and fast- felt more like a keel boat. In fact there can be boats pointing at all kinds of angles doing roughly the same VMG! well- i mean within reason... a chap from Fife claims to have got one planing upwind! |

There was a tiny sixteen yr old girl helming at the nationals this yr. They were lightning downwind and we're relativly quick up wind! Its all down to techique! (Keep it flat no matter what! even if the main is flapping!!!!!) One of the best 400 sailors in scotland over the last wee while is the lightest and the 1's behind it are mainly heavy guys!!
