People certainly race them in two-handed events, so it can be done. I suspect, like most keelboats, the more people you cram onto the rail, the faster it goes upwind and the upwind gain outweighs any downwind loss. I've never sailed a J/80 but I've sailed other J-designs and they like downwind best.

I have seen them sailed ok two handed. Having sailed and won a two handed race in the Beneteau 25 platu I can say I am truly impressed with it and think yet more of the pen and board of Chateau Farr..... which is there a class off near you? |

There is no Beneteau 25 class racing in the UK. They came into the market too late, just after other sportsboat classes took off here. There are a couple racing under SBR in the Solent.

so far on the web I found two or three in the Puddle District, I remember 2 at Pwellhi and there is at least one in scotland....2 on the solent and maybe some scattered around the south coast etc. The j80 worlds was in Falmouth so that is a pretty big draw. However there are 87 in germany and maybe 150 between France, Italy, Spain and Portugal with some high quality sailors in the B 25. I seem to remember everyone 'on the pace' bought cork 1720s - and had to find six beds at events! |

Yes there are a few B25s around in the UK but that doesn't mean there is class racing. As you say 1720s were taking off at the time, plus the more directly comparable 707s. There were a fair number of people "on the pace" in those too.

actually yes, don't forget the 707 if there is even small fleet near you. I did a season of wednesday nights on one and we had it planing 4 nights out of 5 in a run of force 5s. It can win in mixed fleets too. Stable planing platform and an ideal learner-developer boat But the j80 sleeps 4 does it not? which maybe another plus |

The 707 also theorectically sleeps 4; there was a "berth cushions" option. I know people who have slept in them. However I owned one for 4 years and never found bedding down amid the damp sails and aroma from the petrol cans an appealing prospect. I can't imagine the J80 being very much more comfortable.
