Right then i seem to have bought and sold quite a few boats now over the last five years and most of them i seem to get nearly my money back from what i started with .
So my question is what is your best buy and whats been your worse as mine are Best ...Current boat laser 2000 bought last week 13 yrs old use 12 times from new a bargin boat Worse ..... Bought a laser 1 off a mate and its spilt the hull and leaked badly a few years ago

This thread probably only applies to second hand boats and is of course all about depreciation... if we're talking new, then the boat I had the lowest depreciation on was a Musto Skiff. Beneteau 21.7 - advertised as nearly new for €27k in 2007, I actually paid sub €18k including transportation to Valencia. I've zero plans to sell it, but I guess the market in Spain's not great at the moment if I wanted to. I'd probably do as well as to relocate it to Slovenia or Croatia and sell it there.
Laser 130*** - bought for £1000 as it was covered in green gunk in someone's garden. One pressure wash at the Esso garage on the way home, then sailed it for 4 years including the replacement of one new sail and a top section, sold for £1450 - best for cheapest annual cost of sailing Laser 159*** bought for £1600 by turning up with cash for a boat advertised at £1850. 'Take it or leave- there's loads about for sale'. He took the notes. Paid for the XD upgrades and carbon tiller, sailed for two or three years and got me back into dinghy sailing. Sold for £2200. RS200 - bought for £2900- absolute steal, the guy simply wanted to off load his daughter's boat after she went to uni and had no idea where to sell it. Sold it 6 months later for its market price of £4k+. fairest deal- RS300 got back exactly what I paid for it, plus the cost of the new sail I put on it. unfairest deal- RS600 - bought for £1800, seriously FUBARED it to the point of economic write-off, but Noble stumped up for the new mast, new sail and the minor hull repairs. Sold for £2000 with a brand new mast, sail and hull polish. I hate the fact that I had such a big claim and 'everyone else' paid for my stupidity on that one, but I guess that's what insurance is for. worst deal- A hybrid Cheruby thing that didn't float when you stepped in over the back, bought for £6k asking price (never done that in my life before) + extras which were over another £500, sold for well under 3k only a few months later

I guess I've owned plenty of boats which I have sold again for roughly what I bought them for. A Solo for £600, sold a year later for £600 springs to mind, though I'm sure I've made money on some.
Of my current boats, the Minisails have cost me £100 and nothing to buy, but I've spent maybe £300 on each to get it working well - money which I doubt I could get back if selling - does this make them a bad deal? Worst was probably a ToY, which I paid about £200 for and sold on for less than £100, having done work on it inbetween. Can you tell I don't spend much on boats?! |

Hmm, Best deal was probably my Laser 146663 which was bought nearly new from lynal boats in Cheltenham. My Dad paid £1000 back then (i guess 1993) I sold it 10 years ago for more, its still at my Club and still worth more than was paid for it nearly 20 years ago.
I also bought my RS200 from Jersey a couple of years ago, i had to take a gamble and buy off Photos but even so i still paid £3k (i think) and then sold it for over £4k.
In fact it think the only boats i have ever lost money on are:
505 - £000's but i knew i was going to when i bought into the class, still worth every penny blown.
Merlin - Bought because i had money burning a hole in my pocket, then spent good money after bad.
OK Dinghy - I bought a couple of weeks ago and then decided i couldnt be bothered to revarnish it and relisted on ebay after forking out for a new cover and trailer wheels.
However i am not sure that making profit or getting your money back is a good thing for dinghy sailing. The used dinghy market is frankly a joke!

The main thing is to enjoy whatever you buy and when you have had enough sell it on again to someone else i would hate to think how many boats i have had in the past but i know what you mean about lasers i bought a new one in 1990 138486 for £1600 nowdays you could buy it a fraction cheaper than when i bought it.
My last vareo 555 i lost alot of money on it but hey i had a great couple of years sailing it and enjoyed ever minute

Best, I bought a mirror for £30 was an abandoned club boat, sold for £90 on eBay as it needed work and had no sails. It spent the summer painted in the window of Bond Street for a clothing brand. They unloaded £00,000s of boxes of clothing in the road to get the boat in to their van!
The Laser I bought off Laser as a refurb, new to sailing spent loads on XD carbon tiller, trailer etc and sold for a lot less. RS 200 is still in ownership The 700 spent loads of time on its side The Feva was bought new and sold 18 months later, but I can say I owned a new boat! I was lucky I didn't loose much and sold to a family who are doing well with it.

When I was a student in Plymouth me and a mate bought a trailer for £250ish and it came with a free Hornet. First sail we wrecked the thing, including me putting my knee through the crew deck and snapping the rudder. A summer of repairing, sanding, varnishing and learning the hard way about boat maintenance, we got her looking gorgeous again and sold the boat and trailer for £500.
I'd love to say that I spent that cash on books. |

I've lost money on every boat I've owned. Some worse than others. % wise my best purchase was my RS600 which I bought for £3600 and sold for £3250 after nearly 4yrs in the class. 49er was probably the worst but then I paid good money for a very well sorted older boat so come selling time it was always going to be a challenge. The way I see it though, you should expect to loose money on a boat. I dont sail to make money I do it because I enjoy it.

I agree, I don't think I've ever sold a boat for more than it was genuinely worth. However when it comes to buying them it pays to shop about a bit if there's a few out there... that's when you can find yourself a few quid up, even if it's soon spent on other gear, upgrades, insurance, club fees, petrol to events and essential '5% APR crew lubricant' in the evening.
