Beautiful boats, especially up close, I got a look at the fancy ones up close at sail for gold, shame you need to spend the boat price worth in pies to sail the things though

Er no, in fact I was only thinking what with them and the Star wether I should turn the colour off the monitor and watch it in black and white.

Ask that Spanish guy what he thinks of a Finn right now.. LOL

Jimbo absobloodylutely! I would love a modern Finn! There tick all of my boxes! Gorgeous boats! The fat boy thing is a bit of a myth as I understand it, more superfit then superfat! As I understand it you spec your mast an sails to suit your weight! It's never going to be a lightweights boat however. You should see some of the Finns Rodney specs up for himself and his clients just breathtaking! Then compare it to some if the other crap sold as a high quality racing dinghy!

Has to be said the coverage on TV/PC has made them look stunning, best racing of dinghies I think I've ever watched and that includes the 49er medal race in Qingdo 4 years ago.

As an idle thought I've often (well once or twice) wondered what a 'lightweight' finn would be like. As in the Ozzie Lightweight Sharpies. Same hull and deck, build it to 80 kg put an RS300 rig on it, plastic centreboard at half price. The ultimate over 40s singlehander.

I wondered why the baseball kept getting bigger. Then it hit me.

Always had the itch to sail a modern Finn, I don't weigh enough nor am I tall enough, but just for the fun and competition, Masters Worlds with 100 plus entries, could always hope for a light wind event...

Always thought the lightweight's Finn was the Europe? Always fancied one myself (5'6" & 77 kg) but they seem like they are hens teeth on the 2nd hand market

OMG, I agree with GRF on this one. They are slow and seriously out of date.I personally feel they are doing the sport on tv no favors as they just don't look very exciting even in 20 knots, they look like what I imagine racing bath tubs would be like.

I don't think they look nearly as old fashioned as the bicycles that are getting a lot of attention lately.
Anything without a square top main might look old hat to the keen skiff sailor, but to the world at large, a boat looks like a boat. To get 'ordinary' people excited about it, you need to make the people the key thing, not the equipment.

Also weight is not so critical, people like Nick Craig have done respectably at national level weighing around 85kg. At 'mere mortal' level,  I'm sure a person of average weight could enjoy racing finns.

Bikes are an ultra modern invention. If you want old then look at the discus and javelin.
Best wishes from deep in the woods
