Thinking of buying some hiking pads, just wondering if they're really worth it. What are the pros and cons of them?

I was sceptical until I bought a set of Rooster pros. I have to say they are the best purchase I have made and have made a huge difference to how hard I can hike and how long I can hike for as they significantly reduce the fatigue on my leg muscles.

Cons are that they are a bit fiddly to put on and get the pads in the right place but that is a minor niggle compared to the benefits.

I've had a couple of different sets- I had Gul and then Magic Marine 3/4 length "lederhosen" style ones, both got wrecked by the B14. The Gul ones were "fixed" and never in the right place, the Magic Marine ones were velcro into the shorts and difficult to position correctly.

I got, at the dinghy show, a set of the Zhik powerpads. Rather expensive, even with a show discount, but, blimey, life changing.

Mustos are good. Go over the knees and combined with Gill kneepads are really good alround protection. Any colour you like as long as its mainly black... Wink

Pass the skiff, man!

They can transform hiking, the constraint to sitting out becomes muscular, not resistance to the pain caused by an angle in the deck creating a pressure point on your legs. It does depend on the boat tho, I always wear them in the laser, don't need them in the 100 and could never make up my mind about them for the 200. They can also feel a bit strange at first, as if you are on a sliding-seat, so give youself a few races to adapt.

Make sure you get the right length pads. Too long and they can bite into the back of your knees when crouching. I'm 5'10" but Rooster std length are too long for me.

absolutely brilliant piece of kit. I've got rooster ones from about 10 years ago or so, still going strong. at 6 feet in height I find that they are just in the right place which is handy as they are fixed. if you are a shorter or taller than average I would expect the ones with adjustable battens would be best.

cons...expensive but then I wear mine all summer and they get a lot more use than the wetsuit does.
if you get 3/4 length ones you get a stupid tan line half way up your calves.
because the back of your legs aren't hurting anymore you might notice the work that your knees and thighs are doing and I expect your legs will generally ache for longer as you can hike for longer.

well worth the money though but you may need to try several pairs on first to find which are best for you.

So if they're worth getting, could you recommend a decent pair at a reasonable price?

I wore right through a pair of the rooster standard hikers in just one season, but maybe the pro version is better

I've had a pair or the Rooster Pro Hikers for 4/5 years and although there are a few pulls where I've caught them the rest is still as strong as when they were new, I doubt I'd wear through them in anothet 5 years, the seat is very tough material.

Getting the right size is vital, I went and tried them on in Emsworth so I had a good fit and the right size pads, a bad fitting pair can be very uncomfortable.

I've ordered some gull pro thermal jobbies, as they look decent and there cheap on purple Tuesday, fingers crossed they arrive for the 10 hour race on Saturday
