Hi guys,

Now this may be the in the wrong section but I couldn't really find one for buying other things except an actual dinghy advise.

So I've now seen and agreed to buy an ISO but unfortunatly the cover is in tatters and it needs to be replaced, but I'm a bit confused between the PVC and polycotton along with other material options so I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me figure which type of cover would be best for my ISO and any manufacturer suggestions would also be gratefully received.

Cheers
Ali

PVC coated Polyester is what you would probably consider a 'normal' cover. Polyester fabric coated with PVC for waterproofness.
The Polycotton is a thicker 'canvas' cover which has the advantage of breathability. Generally longer lasting but also a lot more expensive.
Being an all fibreglass boat I would have though the PVC would be fine for an ISO.
The thing to watch for would be the different 'attachment' options that different manufacturers use. Ranging from simple 'string' ties, through straps and buckles, to straps and quick release buckles.
Also consider boom up or boom down options if you want to use the cover while trailing.

If you love your boat then invest in Polycotton. However I'd agree with Lukepiewalker that PVC is OK for plastic boats.

PVC covers do come in many different grades. Some seem to be barely above bin liners others are very good.

Have a looks around the dinghy park at different classes and look at who makes the covers that look best and fit the best.

I've not been a fan of of boom up covers as they are harder to put on and not so good to use for trailing. That said a good fitting one is less like to pool water than even the best fitting boom down.

Yeah thanks guys, I'm sure I'll love the boat but I'm not a billionaire either and for example rain and sun who I reckon make pretty decent covers have a £70 price increase between their PVC and polyester covers! So I was just wondering whether it is really worth it, (I mean I don't want to be buying new covers every second year.)

P&B give a 5 year guarantee on their covers, not sure about anyone else but worth looking out for.
If money is a concern, with an all fibreglass boat, I would have no problem with a PVC cover.

Lots of cover makers out there, most would be keen for your business, can't comment on this one but may be worth a look, best probably to speak to them all on the phone, see exactly what they are offering for your money..

I would not want a non-breathing cover that lay flat on the deck.
It will trap water against the gelcoat and cause osmosis.

If you plan to use your boat a lot I would go for the polycotton. So much easier to take off and put back on as it's nowhere near as stiff as the PVC versions.

There isn't a deck to speak of on an ISO, so not much boat/cover contact. As I remember it, the standard package that Topper sold came with a PVC cover and it was fine. Any reputable PVC cover should last about 5 years.

By the way, I have an ISO undercover you can have for £60 if you want.
