This is purely for my own interest but if your class allowed it would you buy a D4/DIAX2/3DL(now North have sorted the mould out and are pushing hard) load path sail/sails for you boat? what do you perceive the advantages or disadvantages to be?

they are slightly different. they aren't strictly load path sails as the fibres are in straight lines(they are not allowed to curve them or UK McWilliams will get very upset and send in the lawyers) and do not following the direct loads. they are also stuck on after the sail is put into one piece instead of being laminated into the cloth.

no, too damn expensive for the added benefit as an up front cost. maybe they will last longer than a normal laminate sail and work out cheaper in the long run...trouble is I can't afford one to start with. can't see that they will give that much of a performance boost to the average sailor. most will buy cos the top guys who use them in a very subsidised form use them.
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

advantage is no stretch and shape change around the seams, disadvantage is cost cost cost,
for example a B14 main is 925 for the paneld sail ex vat and the 3dl is 1235 ex vat,
the racing life is longer but the total life of the sail is less,

our class rules dont let us have any lamiante sails except no.1 and thats only polyester so no intrest for me but my next boat will be 3dl or D4

all I know for sure about expensive sails is this: you better be up the front of the fleet otherwise you run the risk of looking a wee bit daft coming 23rd with them up Wink

true- but if you're in the market for a new sail anyway, and the cost difference isn't an issue for you, why not buy the better sail, the difference would be probably be added to the value of the boat as a result anyway.

Not sure the differene would be added to the value of the boat Jimbo.  For me i would stick with standard cut for a few more years yet.  Its too much money to gamble on a passing fashion.  In Solo's the North ST1 and D+ setup is still proving the quickest, you can even go for carbon battens if you are that way inclined.  For the normal club jockey the difference between a decent laminate fro the same maker would be non existant.  The perception however is its much quicker, well for the very fast boys i am sure it is, but getafix is right coming bottom half of the fleet with one is going to make a sailor look like they have all the gear and no idea!

Hence it adds value and psychological advantage.

You know I'm in the 'one less crap tack' camp, but I wouldn't ignore the technology when it's on offer, assuming somehow it's reserved for elite sailors.  It's free choice and if I worried about all the gear and no idea stereotype, I wouldn't do anything.

FWIW- I haven't bought a North Sail on moral grounds for quite some time:

Then in that case mate can i suggest when you buy your Solo, you Speak with Jim Hunt at HD sails and order an ODL04 with carbon battens, there is simply NO sailmaker that knows more about Solos then Jim.  He will also bespoke the sail to suit your weight and fitness.  He is also great a spending time explaining whats right for you.  Not only this but HD sail numbers are in a super sexy Font! If it is Solo based Jimbo, send me an e-mail mate and i will help fill you in on my findings, as we are/were similar weights so i can save you a couple of years in searching for the right combo.
