....Looks like ISAF have had to re-release an update to their evaluation documentation. Amongst the facts altered:
“in 15 knots and waves both Arups were towed back in to the shore and were not able to complete a Race” Has begrudgingly become: “in 15 knots and waves both Arups struggled to complete a race and ended up returning to shore early.” Apparently this follows Arup posting ISAF the video below from the onboard Go-Pro. That has got to be the best “single angle” 20 minute footage recorded in years. With no crew to swap with when the Japanese pair tired, ISAF requested the Arup’s were taken home. Roland did take the main off and sailed one home under jib. He then sat in an ISAF rib and gave a member of ISAF staff a long commentary on why the other boat sailed an additional 2 miles home to avoid the shifty reach past the rocks. I was sailing the second boat and can also confirm no towing took place; we did have some swims, but also some great wave jumping. The guys at Arup assure me they are not in the business of questioning interpretation so they will stop there, but look at the video and make your own judgement. ISAF gave the Arup a similar write up to the 49er, but without the nod. If this is struggling, then maybe the rest of the evaluation has some questions too? So if that video is the actual day in question where the boats were allegedly towed in, that put things in a different light. As has been said elsewhere, I'm a Cherub fan but still think its the wrong boat for the 2016, and fortunately the class will live on in it's present guise, which is the main attraction IMHO. But ISAF should hang their head in shame if the info in that report is factually inaccurate and so widely published, that would give me a serious case of "why the hell did I bother" had I been involved in the trials and got that back...

The girls seem to be managing fine, but can hardly be described as not skiff-competent, as was said on another thread.
Nonetheless, they gave up, apparently, and didn't vote for the boat. Hardly a recommendation for selection. Nice video though - makes you want to go sailing!

And on that very same day, the girls sailing the 29erXX gave up and went in too, yet the boat is under powered and too easy to sail apparently.

On the subject of the trials, I do note that the ISAF panel will requie the Mackay FX to be called 49erFX if selected, and recommend a common class association. Why wasn't it able to be entered as such?
alkso, this, from the XX section, is relevant to a lot of the discussion, especially when criticising the sailors...:

Perhaps the copyright owners and Class Association weren't behind the entry? Who knows, there are any number of possible reasons. |

Another boat they didn't fancy and didn't vote for? So, more "won't sail" than "can't sail".

Or alternatively you could say that if a large proportion of them came from 29er and 29erXX backgrounds, yet they failed to shoe-in their own class (and protect their own and their friends investments) then perhaps they took their responsibilities very seriously indeed?
The report is quite telling really and it's good to get some clarity on the Cherub, sorry Arup, entries and the fact that they didn't get towed in, but for all the right reasons for everyone, I think it's good news that they appear to not be going forward in this process.
