It is interesting that in both the Mens 470 and 49er the helm from the previous games is still competing. In the Radial Charlotte went to the Pre-Olympics for both 2008 and 2012...

The draw of the games in the UK has certainly kept people from here on the trail when they might have otherwise have given up and found a job that pays, but as to who will qualify, that is not really on my radar. Whoever it is, especially in the 49ers, will have the weight of knowing that if they bomb several other teams will be shouting "it should have been me!"

I guess I would like to think that those who don't quite make it will be 100% behind the team however it turns out but I guess I take your point Rupert.

I think the great thing about having such a good group of sailors in every class than whoever gets pushed to the top has a great chance of winning a medal. Very few other countries have this. Many just having one good sailor in a class and many are only strong in a few classes...

Does this mean that 470 selections may have been made? http://sailingdinghies.apolloduck.co.uk/display.phtml?aid=231708 I can't think of any other reason for selling such a successful boat.

Quote from Nick Dempsey:

The course has got to be fair. It's not about the spectators, the television audiences and the atmosphere

I think he means: "should be". But I think it's sadly the case that it is increasingly about spectators and TV

I suspect there's no real point in trying to fight it either, other perhaps than to try and curb the worst excesses. If people want sailing in the Olympics and on screens and sailors want to be paid to sail then they are going to have to increasingly put up with photographers getting in the way and courses that are more about TV than good sailing.

That's not what sailing is about. It should be about good sailing, it doesn't matter about the spectators.
