I think it would be a great shame if the class decided to ban those sails. They look freakin awesome!
It's a development class, so let there be development.

Merlins aren't really a development class, they are what was known as a restricted class - far more rules to work within than say an Int 14, and some of those rules are there to stop unrestricted development of materials. Having said that, that sail does look fantastic, and I suspect breaks the letter of the rules, not the spirit, as it is perfectly capable of being rolled like a normal jib.

Bit late in the day, catenary load stess tapes, but better late than never I guess.
Are they kevlar or any other aramid, could be a potential trap to fall in with some folks rule books.. I think it was 1993 we did it on surf sails...

Ye Gods, you can be a bore Graeme!
Why is the sail illegal? And does it mean they should be stripped of the Sailjuice title? |

Thanks Jim. I saw about the 'double reinforcement' stuff but I'm not clear what is meant by this, or why it should be banned. Is it a cost thing (seems slightly ironic for Merlins ;-))?
Not withstanding that, the measured seems veryc clear they are illegal, so I would have expected someone at the front of the fleet to have known this too. |

The original thread states the following, so we'll have to be patient to discover the final decision.
The matter is under discussion between the MROA and the RYA and we plan to have a resolution that we can publish imminently. |

Closing the thread in Pathetic. Matt and Ben sailed that boat superbly through a range of conditions and the fact that the Merlin Association have close the thread means people can not gain a full understanding of the situation. I love the new Aeroweb sails and if they work at keeping sails competitive for longer where is the problem. Now the thread is closed no one has the right to reply. I say well done Matt and Ben spot on sailing and you deserve the title. |
